Its been longer than this for me since the school closed down I was learning at. I noticed of all the martial styles I have practiced, I felt the best, most healthy mentally, physically and spiritually when practicing Aikido. If you get the opportunity take up practice again.

I practiced this Ki Aikido in many parts of the world 40 years ago, I remember doing the same warm up exercise's before we went into the delightful dance of the martial art itself. I am proud to have studied with some of the worlds best Sensei's.

This is what I studied when I studied at the Ki-society. Sensei Koichi Kashiwaya chief instructor in the 90s in Seattle; and yes it was ki-Aikido.

it may not be ki-aikido "material" officially at the time. but the idea of ki-aikido is definetly there and the techniques are mostly the same as modern ki-aikido.

i did aikido 25 years ago and only manage to finish the basics.3 years ago i decided to go back to martial arts and started doing karate and brazilian jujitsu,in one occasion, our sensei asked us to show him any defensive move we know against a hold from the back.i used ushiro dori and surprisingly i managed to throw my partner effortlessly.i did it in a way that i'm not really thinking about it and in a relax manner.just sharing.

I saw Tohei give a demonstration at the Wailuku Public Library in 1977. I was hooked. (He totally humiliated me. He taught some kids how to extend chi in just a few minutes. Then I volunteered to stand up and extend chi. I'm an idiot. Of course I didn't get it.)

@@jordiv.5616 - I stated that badly. Koichi did nothing to diminish me, I felt embarrassed. I am so glad that I was introduced to akido in such a dramatic way by a master.

I was unaware that one's comments could be removed. I believe my comment was in reply to a viewer who suggested that these training methods were of limited utility. I no longer see this comment, so my response is now out of context. To clarify, I have the greatest respect for these drills, although I have not had much opportunity to learn akido for the lack qualified teachers near my home. I have received a few private messages asking whether I myself believed this clip to be of a "fake" fight.

I understood that Aikido users couldn't see the movements and force of Karatekas, and learn to control it just by Aikido drills. But if they had practiced both Karate and Aikido, they would be effective against another Karateka using Aikido. In a real fight, especially in the U.S. injuring another even for self defense causes a real lot of legal trouble. Aikido, at least the form I'm familiar with, uses techniques that would prevent harm from both the attacker and the defender, avoiding injury.

Many of these are not practiced as much nowadays. Back then, this is the full syllabus of "Aiki Taiso Hou" (合気体操方). In Ki no Kenkyukai now it is called as "Ki no Taiso Hou" (気の体操方), which is to be practiced every single time before starting class. I have yet to see an Aikikai instructor practiced the full set before practice. In minutes 06:40 - 07:20, Tada Hiroshi Shihan's lineage still practices this

Fake fight? If you are referring to the demonstrations presented on this video, you are correct that the film does not depict a "real" fight in that none of the participants are seeking to injure one another. Rather, the participants seek to demonstrate their art for us, and the techniques and drills they demonstrate are just that---drills and movements one may practice to improve his technique. By analogy, playing catch or batting practice is not a competitve game of baseball, just practice.

@HitMann1 Tohei Sensei didn't develop Shin Shin Toitsu after O-sensei. He only gave it a name after O-sensei had passed away and the split from Hombu Dojo. When he was teaching at Hombu dojo, he was already teaching "shin shin toitsu" although it was only known as Aikido at that time. It was also because of this that he had gotten in a dispute with Kisshomaru Ueshiba Sensei about his teaching methods.

@NTNGUYEN At the time of this production Tohei was the head instructor at the Honbu dojo. He was awarded his 9th Dan by O-sensei and later his 10th Dan, becoming the only 10th Dan awarded by O-Sensei. This is not an interpretation of Aikikai Aikido, at this time Tohei embodied Aikikai, and was honored in rank and position because he had the greatest insight into O-Sensei's teachings.The Aikikai later evolved, changed, and neglected a lot of the internal teachings.

@HitMann1 The methods that Koichi Sensei taught in this video, however, are based on Koichi's Sensei personal interpretation of the Aikikai's Aikido and are alot different. He didn't call his Aikido interpretation Ki-Aikido until O Sensei's death, but really it has always been different than other Sensei's of the Aikikai's School due to experience with japanese yoga. Ki-Aikido may have very similar techniques from AikiKai, but we have more emphasis on relaxation, one point, and ki development.

@NTNGUYEN Basically if you wanna learn how to fight take MMA, karate, or wing chun. But if you want to have a clear sense of self-defense in its most pure form: to avoid confrontation, as well as to improve your own personal character... Take Aikido or Tai Chi...

@darkreaper91 That is right, Aikido is a martial art designed NOT to fight. When you say you want to learn to fight, it is the same thing as saying "I have an ego, and I want to win, I want to pulverize my enemies." However, Aikido's techniques are designed to STOP a fight, STOP the aggression... that is why Tohei's Sensei Ki Aikido has no strikes: only locks, throws, and pins. Hurting someone and beating them up is EASY; however, controlling them and the situation takes A LOT of skill.

@NTNGUYEN fair enough I guess I am pretty naive to the style of Aikido, but what I'm gathering from you is that Aikido isn't suitable for fighting?
@NTNGUYEN

@darkreaper91 An aikido-man is NOT a fighter! Fighting is not the objective for aikido. Therefore, you are right, a street fighter might not do that, but an Aikido-man will, because he's NOT a fighter. hahaha
