would like to understand how he can land near vertical like this. I'm going to make a guess please correct me if i'm wrong. Lets say the plane can stall at 40mph, if you have a headwind of 40mph and you drive the engine so you're going 40mph, therefore your ground speed is 0mph so you can land almost vertically like this? Would this also work plans that stall at 80mph and headwind is 80mph? i'm guessing maybe you need to go a little faster than stall speed like say 42mph to not completely stall out.

His airspeed was likely 20-40 knots but with that howling wind he could get his groundspeed down to zero. Good pilot applying his resources properly.

@@JoshRendall The distance between the ground surface and the engine is very narrow and by make the engine flattened it increase the distance between the ground and the engine. On the MAX aircraft for example the engine is not flattened, because the landing gear on the max aircraft is taller which increase ground clearance.
