Charvaka, also known as Lokāyata, is an ancient school of Indian materialism. It is considered as one example of the atheistic schools in the Ancient Indian philosophies. Wikipedia It's so nice when Western thinkers get credit and a first pass on ideas that have existed for so ling in other places. India is a prime example of this. So many theories lived and excelled there for thousands of years only to be 'discovered' or 'invented' by the west.

There is a reason why religion goes after the young and impressionable instead of the aged and the scholarly; *as the twig is bent, so grows the tree.* We are all born as atheist until someone we trust starts telling us lies.

There was an entire school of philosophy in India in the 6th century BCE known as Lokāyata, that was atheistic and materialistic. So no, Spinoza was not the first atheist.

Spinoza was a pantheist, right? Is pantheism same as atheism? I think not. Pantheism renders god as identical with nature, because to separate god from nature is to diminish god. This is to me a clever way to render the churches obsolete and is why the assorted monotheisms took umbrage at Spinoza. He was applying Oakham's razor in a most ingenious fashion. I smile when i think he was doing this just to get a rise out of the establishment. If god is the world (and by the way Whitehead said the same thing) then there is less ritual and other nonsense to be concerned with and we can just go about our day's business. How refreshing. And so this is indeed the best of all possible worlds because it is the only one possible.

we already have a word for nature. Don't need to call it "god". If that's all god is, it is merely semantics.

Spinoza believed in god, just not a personal god. He knew we created god in our own image but what he didn't get is that the whole concept of there being a god at all was also a human invention. He still talk about there being a perfect being upon which we project our ideas. He didn't get that god itself is just one of those bad ideas. He was definitely NOT an atheist.

Spinoza did not call himself an atheist and would not have done so because in his day the term atheist was used almost exclusively as a pejorative. It wasn't until the late 18th century that thinkers began to openly identify as atheists. That was the case with the French priest Jean Meslier who authored a treatise attacking all religions while calling for the overthrow of the French monarchy and the abolition of private property. His Testament was not published until after his death. Voltaire published an expurgated version of it which preserved the book's attacks on the churches while excising most of the politically radical stuff. But it was the Enlightenment philosopher Baron d'Holbach, who was the first person to publicly identify himself as being an atheist.

nah there were open atheists is antiquity. Lucretius for one. Youre right about Spinoza. People still use semantics to avoid being openly atheist, which is still mostly viewed as pejorative.

The Epicureans, including Lucretius, professed belief in the existence of the gods. According to the Epicureans, the gods existed in their own realm, outside our natural world. They keep to themselves, and have no interest in our natural world, nor do they have any interest in human affairs. Therefore, it is irrational to fear the gods. There is no such thing as divine retribution.

I've read it. The poem opens with an invocation to the goddess Venus. He references the gods any number of times throoughout the poem. And it is, as I said, he conceived of the gods as existing in their own realm, where they live lives of contemplation. They do not interact with our own natural realm, nor do they take any interest in our own doings. You might argue that this viewpoint was tantamount to atheism, but the Epicureans professed to be religiously pious.

@@JimFarm "he conceived of the gods as existing in their own realm" No he didn't. He referred to the gods as a rhetorical device, which is extremely common in poetry. But he presents a long and compelling argument for atheism. It's probably the best argument for atheism ever written. Ask Sam Harris. "If God can do anything he can make a stone so heavy that even he can't lift it. Then there is something God cannot do, he cannot lift the stone. Therefore, God does not exist." - Lucretius

Spinoza was first a Jew. His questioning of the chosen people narrative drew enough negative attention from his faith, that he turned to Christianity. His questioning of some Biblical accounts put him in disfavor with Christians. At the time, the Bible and New Testament were considered to be, literally, the word of God. His "Ethics" was an attempt to argue that purely religious scriptures could not be taken "literally". He would have agreed with Jesus' words in Mark; Chapter 12, Verses 29 - 31; the "love God - love thy neighbor" narrative. He would not have taken the "walking on water" or the "fish feeding narrative" literally.

Because God was created by evil and/or stupid men, the Bible actually teaches us that evil is good. Read the Bible to learn of the evil things your God allegedly did and or ordered humans to do. Here are some examples: How wicked is a new born baby, so many of whom God murdered in the flood? Surely the most evil action in Earth’s factual and/or fictional history is the drowning of millions of people and animals - including their new born children, who could not possibly have offended God. God allegedly instructed Joshua to enter Jericho and kill every man, woman and child. He further instructed the Israelites to kill every man, woman, child and suckling plus their innocent animals if they found one person in any village, town or city who did not worship him. Did 40 children deserve to be mauled to death by a bear for calling a prophet baldy? Well God thought so, which is why he allegedly ordered the bear to carry out that massacre. After forcing Pharaoh to not free the Israelites (by harding his heart), God chose to punish the Egyptians by killing their first born children - because Pharaoh diid what God had forced him to do. Not only is that an example of evil injustice and infanticide, but it is an example of absolute stupidity. Even after Pharaoh had agreed to free the slaves, God stopped him by supernatural force - and then punished other peoples' children because Pharaoh carried out God's will against Pharaoh’s will. God instructs that a man should have his bride killed after discovering she is not a virgin. Which is the greater sin, sex before marriage or murder? According to the Bible, murder is not only a lesser sin - but a necessary instrument of justice against the monstrous sin of sex before marriage. How ridiculously evil is that? In Psalm 135 verse 9 God gives his advice on achieving happiness as “Happy is he who dashes an infant against a rock”. So, according to the Bible, if you wish to be happy, dash an infant against a stone or rock. I could go on about approval of slavery (including selling children as sex slaves), child sacrifice as a thanks to God for helping win battles, having One's son killed for coming home drunk, killing children for lack of respect for their parents (even if the parents were child abusers or murderers), eating of babies...etcetera… These are certainly not MY morals and should not the morals of a good god. These examples are among the reasons why I, who nearly became a priest, am an Atheist - and happier for it. Finally, how can a moral person worship a god who boasts about how he created evil in Isaiah 45/7? Considering this and a multiplicity of other evidence, I have to conclude that to worship God is to worship evil. So I would rather believe in no god than an evil god, because then I would be worshipping evil.

Humans have lived and thought with ideas similar to (and equally as sophisticated as) contemporary people for thousands of years. Only a naive or ignorant person would have such a limited understanding of our nature and history to suggest otherwise. Get over yourself...

They (Christians) do NOT demonstrate the faith, they so claim by their own scripture. Is this the deception of the evil they speak of through Demons and Devils? Or down right lies? These Christians speak of powers and miracles through the power of their God. Yet we see nothing. Are you these cowards of lies, then show humanity your faith or forever this day you lay silent!

It is to witness otherwise intelligent people who so easily cast aside facts, logic, common sense, and the most important one, reason for the supernatural without a shred of compelling evidence. For Christians to claim that god popped out of nowhere and then waves his magic wand, he says a few words, and suddenly everything comes into existence from absolutely is truly delusional.........

Atheist is a term invented for and by those who play teeter totter with them, the theists. Which is most of the world. Humans have always seemed to be superstitious but God moves further and further away as we learn what is reality. Abrahamic religions are the real problem, serving more as metaphorical sheep pens for the still most tribal of the evolving apes. Abraham is the reason these shallow conversations exist.
