Raiders #63 didn't track Patriots #71 fast enough and failed on his attempted block. Stabler should have scrambled.

Remember watching this game as a kid and I was stunned by the penalty call. Championship teams need to be great...and have some good fortune too.

And to think, Stabler was Joe Namath's backup at Alabama 😊

My guess is that the special report was on the continuing saga of TWA Airlines Flight 847 which had been hijacked two weeks before and the hostages who were held after the incident

that was a penalty that saved the Raiders Superbowl season

The refs called that roughing the passer? Stabler still had the ball when the defender hit him. Exactly how was the defender supposed to stop his forward momentum to keep from hitting Stabler? Refs must have had money on the Raiders

There has always been a penalty for committing a personal foul, which that was.
@davidburke95965 сағат бұрын
That play should have never happened. Patriots were running out the clock & on a 3rd down Phil Villapiano almost tore the jersey off Russ Francis running his pattern. The GUTLESS refs didn't call Holding which led to QB Steve Grogan throwing his helmet about 50 yards. That gave the Soot & Silver 15 more yards.

There is a Game-Of-The-Week version of the 68 title game which has been out there, but the John Facenda-narrated version has never been released by NFL Films

Horrible call. That Patriots team just might have been the best team ever. A slow start, then total domination.

It was stabler’s arm throw that threw Hamilton’s arm into his own face. No penalty

Thanks for the amazing video. That Eagles’ kicker might have turned in one of the worst performances in NFL history. 2 missed fgs, a crucial missed 18 yd extra point that was wide by 8 yards and then kicked an onside kick that went backwards after 5 yards. Yikes

Given the technology afforded to NFL films at the time, this is remarkable! Their bottomless source of footage, close ups, and astounding editing - well, just wow! True art in motion. Thank You Dave for this wonderful gem! I think these 4 teams still stand the test of time as of today and these 2 video productions truly “feel” like a game is happening.

Was in a department store in Denver and stopped by the TV section where they had this game on on about 10 TV sets. There was 5 or 6 other guys watching it there as well. Got there just before this play. All of us, being Denver Broncos fans and avid Raider haters cheered loudly when that pass fell incomplete as it was 4th Down. Then we let out a collective groan of disapproval when they called that BS Roughing the Passer call. Pats got robbed.

For all the NBA on NBC love from the 90-91 season on, CBS was great with Stockton and Hubie when they became the #1 team. Big lift from the Stockton-Russell and Stockton-Heinsohn pairings.

The first Baltimore TD should’ve been called back. No Dallas player touched the ball. Without that play Dallas would’ve won. They outplayed Baltimore.

This was a revenge game for the Raiders. As good as the Raiders were that year, the Patriots destroyed the Raiders 48-17 earlier in the season for their only loss of the season.

@CharlesHoward-ud6qvКүн бұрын
I was watching this game at a friends house. They all left because they thought the Patriots were going to win. I almost threw the tv out the window. People say the Patriots weren’t good until 2001 but they are totally wrong. From 76 to 78 they had one of the best teams ever assembled in NFL history. Go check their roster. Mike Haynes , Tim Fox, Roland James , Hamilton, Steve Nelson, Stanley Morgan who may still hold the yards per catch average at 19, Harold Jackson, Russ Francis, John Hannah, Leon Gray, Sam Cunningham, Steve Grogan, Ike Forte, that’s all I can do from memory but there were many more. The Raiders only lost one game that year. They were destroyed in Foxboro. In 78 Chuck Fairbanks the head coach, quit prior to the playoffs starting.

Bunch of bullshit…no way Montana throws 3 interceptions
@MaxAmerica.Freedom22 сағат бұрын
Montana threw 3 interceptions against a weaker Dallas defense in the championship game January 1982. The 78 Steelers had a better defense than Dallas. If it's any consolation, I hated the Steelers back then.
