I personally run steel helmets in games, I make the experience of being shot in the head enjoyable for me and the opponents if they’re in close range. The sound and feeling of the projectile making contact with steel is incredibly satisfying, with mild hearing protection such as broken earphones…you will be able to block out high frequencies of ringing steel. But, that also depends on the harmonics of the shell itself and how much the liner system dampens the sound. Nonetheless, I believe helmets are *kinda* essential in CQB games. In my most recent visit to Tac City, I was shot in the head a total of 8-9 times. With my headphones plugged in, I could still hear and feel the impacts so I was able to call my hits without suffering from what are essentially hammer-to-anvil (two hard surfaces sandwiching a soft medium) wounds on my scalp and forehead. I also wear hats in public, so that is a recipe for some pretty nasty skin infections if I opt to not wear any head protection.
