in my opinion, The Third Policeman is genius, a great comic work of the English language, with numerous exquisitely written passages . I read it first nearly 50 years ago and read it again every five years or so, and always laugh at its wit and surreal humor.

What a fantastic story...I've walked the river fishing it all around Barnes Gap, I never knew it was a highway where robbers caught one's coming out of Derry! Makes me proud!

I read Flann O' Brian fascinating book The Third Policeman some years ago. It definitely was ahead of it's time and very delightful to read, for a book published about 1940.

A lovely and uplifting video, I particularly liked the interviews. I think it a pity the makers didn’t think to use a musical soundtrack more in keeping with the spirit of the project.

Why do I know Packey McSorley?
@irenemax3574
@irenemax3574 Жыл бұрын
@@paudsmcmack3117 Packy was a moonshiner like his father before him (I think there's a mention of Packy's father, Mick McSorley the poteen maker, in this video) He and his brother Mickey started McSorley Brothers garage on the Tobermore Road, Draperstown, in the late 1950's. Packy was an insurance agent for companies such as Eagle Star, Guardian Royal Exchange, General Accident, etc., and he was also something of a People's Advocate or "fixer". He was very smart, and a great talker and schmoozer. Perhaps you or someone you know once needed something fixed? Er, maybe someone crashed the car after a feed of drink, and then was breathalysed, so now they're in danger of losing their licence and reputation... well, Packy would have been the man to consult about the issue. He was a diplomat, a mediator, a problem solver, a loan arranger. A fixer. Packy was very good to people that he liked, and very cruel and dismissive to those he didn't. He was a great character, but alas, most of the time, he was a lousy husband and father (I'm well qualified to make that statement). He had many friends but I'm sure he would have had some enemies also, because he never hesitated to insult or offend someone. At the same time, he could be warm and witty and charming. And kind and generous. A complex and interesting man. When he was dying of cancer, the house for weeks had an endless stream of visitors, people coming to pay their last respects to a beloved friend. And the wake was great craic because lots of people sat up all night telling funny Packy stories. Well I suppose that might answer your question 😅 Did you know any of the other people I named?

Which dialect are they speaking?
@stevesandford8993
@stevesandford8993 6 жыл бұрын
They are speaking Northern Irish Gaelic, yet that dialect in itself has certain sub-dialects... (Donegal Irish, for example, would be noticeably different...) Other native-speaking areas of Ireland with specific dialects include Galway/Connemara, in the West, and Munster, (Cork/Kerry) in the South. (Something that might amuse you is that I went to an Irish Speaking secondary school in Dublin, though I an not a native speaker. On a visit once to the Gweedore Gaeltacht area of Donegal, my accent and use of syntax provoked general hilarity among the Donegal native speakers!!!) xx SF

It was starting to read the The Third Policeman which brought me here. I heard it mentioned by Alex Lifeson reminiscing about Rory Gallagher, who he said bought him a copy by way of offering him an insight into Irish humour. As I turned the first page I knew exactly what he meant.

It's amazing that native monolingual Irish speakers managed to survive into the 1950s in a state that was hostile to anything Irish. And to this day, many clowns in the north have got it into their heads that Irish is somehow a foreign language, despite it being native to the land. Poor stupid bastards.
@SeanQuinn-IrishMarxist
@SeanQuinn-IrishMarxist 7 жыл бұрын
WinnerorNot8 No, many people genuinely belive Irish to be a foreign language in northern Ireland. I should know as I have had the displeasure of dealing with these people before. Even Jim Allister has came out and publically stated that an ILA would be a direct threat to his Britishness.

The Irish branch of my family tree were from North Antrim and one of my great-aunts was even very pregnant when she came, her daughter being born in NY harbor! Can't imagine sailing across the freakin' ocean while far along in a pregnancy. This 3x great aunt eventually settled in Kansas City MO as had my 3x great-grandfather and other family members when they came over.

Incredible to hear something that is not dead, but from a place where it is no longer alive but sounded fairly similar but different in subtle ways from how it is still spoken elsewhere. It's fascinating that he used "uathu" (or uafa) where they would tend to use "faoi" in Donegal.
