I haven't watched the whole vid yet so I don't know if you mention this lol, but the composer Frank Wildhorn talked about how his son was a huge death note fan and how when Wildhorn was approached to write the musical, his son said "you have to do it, it'll be the coolest thing you've ever done". I feel like this musical is a testament to what happens when adaptors actually do their research into why people love the original.

Soichiro: Don't cross that line! Light, approximatly 7 miles over the line(TM): Yes, absolutely

1:03:19 there’s actually a third meaning I noticed, idk if you didn’t think of it or just chose not to mention it, but the song is all about death and endings, so the word “goodbye” is also saying that as long as these stories have been around, they’ve ended

Unrelated but the beginning of the video mentioned the death note adaptions people need to know that there's a Death note 2015 jdrama that is also a decent adaptation of the series

All the points you think may be a reach sound amazing and really plausible to me!! Ty for this amazing analysis! Ps. “Brave new world” originally came from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which I think is an intentional reference considering Light’s song is titled Hurricane.

I just discovered this musical and I'm obsessing over how good it is. Definitely Frank Wildhorn's best work. Usually there are at least a few duds in his scores, sometimes a lot of them mixed in with his incredible hits. Not a low moment in this whole thing though.

I can’t stand musicals. Terrible. And I think it’s weird that death note, which is honestly pretty mid is so relevant in the USA. Just weird. But I loved your video and I appreciate you’re analysis, as well as your respect for art.

death note mid? like its not the greatest but its still good
@ArroyoRiver4 ай бұрын
@@eluscara for reference, death not isn’t even in the top one hundred selling mediums in Japan, and it hasn’t been for a long time. It’s specifically a USA thing. It came and went pretty quick there. It’s relevancy stems from being one of the earlier breakout anime in the USA imo. It’s not bad. But about halfway through it certainly loses all interesting value, and throws its on characters in the dumpster. At least Light’s final moments were still fun to watch tho.

Thank you for making this. As a musical theater nerd with some acting experience but absolutely musically illiterate I had no idea the music itself so was ingrained in the narrative. This just makes it an absolute tragedy this did not get a New York English broadway production. Like the part where you say "L doesnt have the brain capacity to make his own melody anymore" while being controlled. The fact this was thought out in the music is so genius. I found The Way it Ends to be so epic. I know you found it boring and basic. But I feel that gives the actors the ability to show what they can do with it. Throw in all the emotion and their own style into it. The music is itself basic so the actors can throw everything into the characters without worrying about singing something complicated. Idk if that makes sense or not.

One small, but very unsubtle thing I like about the Japanese production is how they specifically have Soichiro's actor sing in a more traditional Japanese style, denoting his old-fashioned way of thinking ("Doing things the honorable way is the right way."), while Light sings in a more modern, Western style, bringing in his fresh, youthful perspective and lack of deference to tradition ("To Hell with honor, if it doesn't get the job done."). It's a nice culturally specific touch.

Hey Izzy! First off, this video was AMAZING! I'm about to finish a video about the musical myself and I'm giving a direct shout-out and link to this because your analysis of music theory is fantastic and it's something I'm not covering because 1, I'm not trained in it and 2, Nobody could do as good as this. I just wanted to apologize in advance because we seemed to have some parallel thinking in our scripting for a couple of lines, especially with me having more or less the exact same opening sentence and I sincerely hope that you and your audience don't think I plagiarized your brilliant work.

I love the fact that every song of Lights always starts with a question. In Where is the Justice? It obviously starts off with the title question, in Hurricane it starts off saying “Did it really happen?” in Secrets & Lies he starts his verse with “Why give away half of my years to see somebody’s name?” But as he becomes Kira he answers every question he asks. As he sinks into becoming Kira, he questions himself less. In the beginning of him becoming Kira he wonders “Am I the justice?” but soon in the end he truly believes he is the justice.

As well as L being Lights opposite, he starts every song off with a statement. Showing he believes in his theories and himself.
