Is the top stones dressing or part of the substrate if so wat kind of stones
@jerryribyat1481Сағат бұрын
Get that water retaining gravel off the top of your root ball top dressing gravel actually acts as a mulch that's probably the main cause of cactus rotting out is filling the pot all the way up to the top potted plants 101 says never fill the pot all the way up to the top if you can see your soil dry without the gravel in the way you'll know when it's time to water

I heard people said that water from above enhanced their colors
@RareCactus2 күн бұрын
That’s interesting 🤔 I think it’s the sun that gives them color but do think watering from above every once in a while is also beneficial. It’s just that in some cases (high humidity or indoor growing) it’s best to water from below most times to avoid fungal infection.

Even that _Selaginella_ is awesome to see. As others have said, I hope it remains safe. I’m from San Diego, California, and here we have a little "problem"-and also in Baja California+BC Sur-of Korean & Chinese visitors stealing millions if _Dudleya_ plants from the ocean cliffs. Some get caught. But others make thousands of $$ online. And _Dudleya_ don’t often transplant well, let alone ship well across the ocean. Apparently, the ones that survive shipping are being bred in Asia, so it’s not all bad. They’re just…not in California. Lol. I wish they’d just take seed pods.

If my cactus is wrinkly at the base and sort of flopping to one side but very firm, is it just dehydrated? I water a little bit 2 days ago with a squeeze bottle. Wondering when it'd swell back up. Also in South Florida

Hola Ignacio!

Did you know that up to 6 species of cactus (maybe more) are called “peyote” or some variation of the name in Mexico? That means it’s not a unique identifier and therefore useless at labeling plants 😅 It’s like using “cactus” to identify a species.
@ignacioperez35187 күн бұрын
¿Sabías que?: Peyote es el nombre con el que lo identifican las Tribus, para hacer sus rituales ancestrales. desde antes que se inventaran los nombres científicos.

If you live in a humid environment, keeping the crowns dry makes all of the difference. Cacti get watered from the top in nature where their contortions are perfect for their development, unlike in our pots.

Hey Comanchee, in your well experienced opinion, what would you say would be the absolute BEST soil mix for Astrophytum, particularly Ornatum? I see some people say amending their soil mix with a tiny bit of lime is good for them, since they live in lime formations in habitat. I ask because i have a bag of lime in the garage for spreading on my lawn, and wondered if adding a spoon full to my Astrophytum's soil mix would be beneficial to them. Whats best for the plant is whats best for all, yea?
@RareCactus13 күн бұрын
@@risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302 hey! That’s a good question and a source of huge debate. I myself don’t use lime because I found in my research that it is a stressor. In habitat, they have evolved to withstand it, and it makes them tougher long run. But in cultivation, especially if they’re not used to it, it can kill them. I would run an experiment and see how a few plants react after 2-3 years because I suspect nobody has done the experiment and they’re just sharing opinions 😅
@risenfromyoutubesashesagai630213 күн бұрын
@@RareCactus Well sir, I definitely don't want to run an experiment on any of my Astros... I love them far too much to take any risk!!! I'll just stick with the good ole mineral heavy mix for them. Thank you for your response. I too am an east coaster... just far more north of you. My wife has family in Port St Lucie, so we try and visit your state every so often. Its just a terrible, terrible drive from my state. Being much further north, my plants must join me and my family indoors each and every winter. I must dial back all water by mid September, and keep them dry all winter long. I'm glad it's only mid July, I still have quite a few more grow weeks left from up here! Happy growing, Comanchee! Keep up your good work, and keep your content flowing!!!
