Voldermort made an oath to snape, promising he won’t be killing Lily but just Harry because the prophecy he needed to kill either Harry or Neville. But Lily got in the middle and didn’t let him do that, she made him agree to that if he let him kill her he’ll spare Harry. There Voldermort did actually kill her. Now this is how the clause works, snape wanted Lily alive, but Lily wanted herself be sacrificed for Harry. So the vow snape made for Lily is now on Harry. When Voldermort also tried to kill Harry it went against the vow, and the curse rebounded. Because you will die if you break an unbreakable vow. And Voldermort broke his.
