It was a 90 degree's hot and humid day here when 250,OOO people paraded ,this parade went into the night past midnight ,my parents thought the war would be over in a year, I remember the 5th avenue "Victory in Japan" day parade in 1945 ,and as the kids are shown in this newsreel film I sat on the street curb got up when horses passed by ,The tar on 5th avenue's street was torn up by the army tank's threaded wheels..

Anyone who remembers the 1970s, was there a lot of excitement, discussion or engagement in the years leading up to America's bicentennial? Because as you might have noticed, there isn't a peep from the government or media about the 250th, and the public doesn't seem interested or aware
@geraldlocklear4373 Жыл бұрын
It was huge. Fast food restaurants had bicentennial commemorative glasses. American car companies had special Spirt of 76 editions. There were huge parades that 4th of July all over America from small towns to big cities. It was great. I was turning 7 that summer.

Thanks! I'm wondering, how early did the public start talking about the 200th anniversary? The 250th is 2 1/2 years away, and it doesn't seem like the public knows or cares

@@gc3k From what I can remember they started talking about it in 1975 maybe even ‘74

I think every state has a commission on planning events for 2026, and there is a national commission. A lot of historians have been trying to get people thinking about 2026--but it feels like not enough is happening.
