I noticed the headlights were still on when the driver escaped the vehicle. I thought they had to pull the battery shutoff when escaping the car, but maybe they didn't have those back in the day? I don't know for sure

This crash is often obscured by the Mercedes CLR's iRacing-esque airborne moments, and the #3 Toyota GT-One popping a tire on the last lap when it had a shot at the overall win. But dear lord was it a horrible accident. We could've lost Boutsen there and then.

I think this was the last year of the truly great Le Mans circuit, no chicanes at Dunlop or on the Mulsanne. A real test of man & machine.

@@JanTonovski yeah they introduced the Muslanne chicanes then. In 1987 they added the S bend/chicane at Dunlop. Then it was just a flat out right hander.
