Sorry about slow reply. The main track is excellent and you could almost take a pushchair! Going over the ridge is steep and has some sections with exposed roots. I wouldn't say it was advanced but it is more technical and challenging than the main route.

I've now got a Garmin InReach, not sure I would have taken it on this ride as it wasn't an overnight adventure. We had an emergency personal locator beacon with us though.

I had my Mini 2 ,it has a SOS on it to alert RCC in Wellytown and good txt sending all the way through the St James so friends knew where I was also the tracking system works very well

The entire country is just incredible. Such contrast between places and sudden changes like the top of the Haast pass where the West Coast finishes and Otago starts.

The river road there is just spectacular and the climb isn't too bad... The descent is a lot of fun unless cars hold you up!
