Not sure if anyone has said this but Jack Kirby had a falling out with marvel and Stan Lee around this time over original artwork that he deserved to get back so he could sell it at conventions like th sdcc and ny comicon. He was working at DC and this time on the new gods related comics that were all about darkseid and his kids

I was born in ‘78 so I kinda missed the Big Jim line, except for adds in old comic books that I was collecting. Really cool to see this origin story - great video!

Another excellent video about a subject near and dear to my little plastic heart. I, too, check out the Big Jim listings every morning, though I’m more interested in completing the original sportsman/college jock series than the Wolf Pack (I recall my mother wasn’t taken with the series reboot, so any purchases of the line stopped there). Someday I might dip my toes in the Wolf waters-especially as I’m now getting into the 70’s action flicks that I was a hair too young to indulge in and appreciate at the time. (My parents were taking me to the drive-in to see “Winnie the Pooh”, not “Billy Jack”). Also, it occurred to me while watching that the MOTU/Big Jim DNA runs deeper still as Torpedo Fist and Warpath (and certainly Double Trouble) all smack of character names from Eternia. Mattel never abandons a good idea...

I’m thinking that by the time I have the ability to consider looking at a Mego for an upgrade, I’ll 3D print what I want. They lost me when they re-appeared YEARS ago with the Star Trek Hollow Boots and I’m not sure what else I thought was inferior to some of my fully functional pieces stamped 1976 or whatever.
@cdouglashall9 сағат бұрын
I stumbled upon this a just now. I had no idea Mego was making new bodies. Ages ago I stumbled upon a truly hyper-articulated body by Type3 Toys but they were not for sale. I recall someone had swivel biceps but Type3 may have also had swivel ankles. It seems these hands are an upgrade and more like GI Joe’s Kung Fu Grip - that would be great. This new body looks a bit too small and not as posable as the Type3 as I recall. That Superman head looks too big for its current body and the new body makes the uniform look much too big and the head even more over-sized.

As a comic guy I can’t identify the artist. Honestly, it’s probably not I identifiable. But it’s definitely not Sal Buscema.

WOW! Congrats on the grails and completing the set! I know how you feel about Canadian packaging, like I view comics; I've bought some CGC graded comics but ONLY when they were CAN. instead of U.S. cover prices, and if it was before we got a comic shop even close to me, I want the barcode in the corner box and not Direct Market. GREAT boxes for the P.A.C.K. and amazing & clear bubbles on the accessory sets!

I never had the Big Jim figures, but I did have the double trouble outfit sets, a couple of them anyway. I believe IIRC they were available for cheap at Pic n Save. I know I had both of the deluxe sets you purchased. I used them with my Mego Star Trek and Planet of the Apes figures and of course they were too big!

Brian, I don’t remember seeing any packaging other than the window boxes in Montreal. I also don’t remember seeing the solid box Big Jim either. I owned Torpedo Fist, double trouble big jim and Zodak. Even though the tattoos would rub off and the buckles would snap in half I didn’t care because there was so much play value in these. Congrats on your acquisitions. It’s such a shame that the Big Jim line ended in North America. The continued international waves are amazing. On a related note I remember a hot wheels mainline formula style race car with P.A.C.K deco.this was the first time I ever encountered a cross over between Mattel toy lines. I thought it was so cool

I had the Big Jim camper, the Sky Commander playset. which was a Barbie jetliner with new art and a different interior and a rescue winch that was cool looking but didn't really work, and the Howler bike. I had the wolfpack Big Jim, and a couple of the costume packs, and best of all, the Laservette, which was pretty indestructible. It lasted long enough for my nephew to have fun with it in the 2010s.

My BF's older brother had some of these. I can recall the holster and silver pistol from Jom, the communicator or as I like to call it now Pipboy. I recall the boots with the paw prints and the bolas and whip, all sitting inside what was left of the Big Jim Sky Commander.

My brother (‘70) and I (‘71) were gifted the Big Jim camper set, I think we were too young and it didn’t click. Eagle Eye and Mike Power came a year, maybe two later and the timing was right… hooked on Joe, not Jim. Thanks Brian for a great reflection on the series we missed out on, or perhaps disregarded.
