Nobody can remember when it happened, when humans became the most feared creatures in the galaxy. All we know for sure is that early in their violent evolution, they were supposed to die out, except they didn't. None of us know where their home world is, the species is spread so far and wide; no one's been able to discern their origin. It's their very hardiness that has allowed them to inhabit almost every corner of the galaxy. Of course, it doesn't hurt their chances when every planet out here has found a way to exploit their services. Exploration, construction, planet engineering even entire armies have been utilized at some point by every other known species. It seems they're willing to do any work for as little a place to stay and some food. It doesn't even have to be good food or safe place, they make due no matter how harsh the environment. Therein lies their utility and the reason they are so feared. Even just the individual physiology of one human is remarkable. An extraordinary ability to resist radiation, even recovering from lethal exposures after some time, symptoms of which take considerable time to develop. Their blood can quickly solidify when exposed, allowing their bodies to heal from almost any kind of trauma with the application of primitive medicine. It's not uncommon to see one missing limbs and continuing to live well into their usual life expectancy. Like most intelligent life, they have soft outer layers, but just underneath this soft body is a mineral lattice of rigid armor, which protects their most vital organs and gives extra rigidity to their extremities. They call them "bones," and even these can heal from breakage. Together these humans are capable of incredible feats. They're extremely social creatures, able to become familiar with most other species at some level, but no matter where they came from, humans will always seek each other out and keep each other safe and protected. Their is a kinship among even the most far flung humans that is unrivaled by any other species. If you crossed just one of them, expect annihilation. Enraged humans are willing to sacrifice themselves by the thousands for a victory. Behaving as if one could be as much victorious in death as those who lived to see it. Human folklore claims many species of their home world had this extreme nature, but they alone possessed the intelligence to seek the stars. Many species can recount this moment in their evolution, when the species collectively reached out beyond the constraints of their home worlds soon after becoming reasoned creatures. Life can't last long on planets. Oppressive gravity, competitive wildlife and erratic weather are just a few of the factors that make space travel essential for survival. Everyone abandons their planet, seeking the sterile safety of wide-open space. Humans however, by their own myths and legends, seem to have suffered several millennium on their home world. An unfathomable stint of turmoil, violence and anguish, on a rock which presumably had several times the gravity of most life bearing worlds and several consistent life ending events which would have made intelligent life's continuation impossible. Yet, humans endured and indeed flourished. Some say they suffered for a millennium AFTER discovering the means to explore the cosmos... madness. Truly mad is our relationship with their kind, for as much as we make use of them, we all collectively fear them. There's no doubt this species could decimate all other life forms, dominating this galaxy as they see fit, yet they remain humble. Greed exists among them, but it seems that even the most nefarious among them operate by a kind of indiscernible code of honor. Many species remain baffled having been defeated by humans, only to be spared at the brink of annihilation, then aided by the very humans who brought them there. They seem to empathize with any living creature, no matter how different; yet they remain ruthless, unyielding at times. Unstoppable, yet self-effacing, vicious yet kind, everywhere yet only a part of themselves. Humanity, in the truest sense of the words, are one of a kind.
