These last two Zelda games have made me realise that I LOVE smaller more restricted worlds with a linear story, for Zelda games at least. I prefer those qualities found in OOT and Majora's Mask to the new formula. Everything you do just feels so much more meaningful in these restricted games, while everything loses meaning through repetition and tedium in TOTK and BOTW. The narratives are also so much more engrossing and powerful in the older games, and they tie into the gameplay beautifully, rather than the bizarre storytelling methods of these last two games.

Oh may gosh. I feel your pain. You poor guy. This reminds me of my first attempt to play this game. It was overwhelming. I only defeated one dungeon, which was the bird one. I also visited Kakiriko and Hateno. That is it. That was a long time ago. I am on a different playthrough now. I am doing much better now. I completed all of the main story except the climax. I am going to delay the final showdown with Ganandorf because I want to complete side activities. I do just fine without duplicating. The trick is to be a better at farming. I want to give my advice. Here is what helps for me. My biggest advice is this. Complete Breath of the Wild first. It is helpful. This KZfaqr seems rusty. In that case I admit doing another playthrough. They should at least complete the Great Plateu to refresh thier memory. Here is how I approach Breath of the Wild. The most important thing to learn is survival. Know how to hunt, garher and cook. Know how to fight bokoblins and how to manage weapons. From the basics of survival work your way up to the more challenging studf. Obviously Breath of the Wild has to start as the Great Plateu. From there I would just spend time making Link stronger. Do the survival stuff. Buy and upgrade armor sets. The most important ones are those that protect from envoronmental conditions. The most important thing is to visit lots of shrines. Then one can raise health and stamina. After the Great Plateau I recomend visiting Kakariko and Hateno. They are great town hubs to visit. They also provide great story help. Impa is a helpful old lady in Kakariko. Purah is a helpful little girl in Hateni. I like to buy a house in Hateno and live in there. From there, I like to go to the volcanoc area. That has an abundence of ore. So it is the best place to farm for rupees. It also has the easiest dungeon, which is nice. Getting fireproof stuff early is well worth it. Before that happens, Link can still safely farm ore in the cool edges around the volcano. The dungeons are really difficult. I don't touch any of them until late game. By then I am strong enough. So I can tackle things better. The thing I struggle the most with is difficult puzzles. So I just look up a solution online whenever I get stuck. I learned to swallow my pride. I think of super obtuse puzzles as being unfair, so looking up anzwerars seem an accessability thing.

I am doing better with my current playthrough of Tears of the Kingdom. It takes Breath of the Wild and packs in a ton more features. I recommend playing Breath of the Wild first because it lowers the learning curve. My tips for getting started on Breath of the Wild do apply to Tears of the Kingdom. The only main difference is that the game nudges the player towards the bird area, Rito Village, instead of Hateno. I can get away with little to no things involving caves, depths, sky islands or Zonai devices. At some point, I get strong enough to complete the bird dungeon. So I go for that. Then I complete the other three dungeons. Then I can go further. The bird guy and the rock guy are really helpful. I recommend getting both of them early before venturing into caves, sky and depths. Caves are good for gathering bright bloom seeds. Then bright bloom seeds are good for lighting up the depths. In the depths, the most important thing to do first is light up light roots. They are really helpful. Depths are good for resource gathering. There are plants that produce powerful effects when used on enemies. There are ore that is used to get more batteries. I rarely use Zonai devices in early game because the battery is so bad. I rarely visit sky islands, because I don't have good battery. I only go there occasionally to farm sundelions. They are helpful for surviving the depths. I am currently in late game. So I don't know how this is going down. Here is how I am doing. I did a ton of adventuring through caves and depths after getting all four of my buddies. I go stronger. Then I went through an extended quest line in the Faron Region. I don't want to spoil it here. However there was some story twists that completely blew my mind. I also did an awesome quest involving the Deku Tree. At this point. I do have a good battery. I can make a basic airplane with auto build. I gan drive that plane for a decent distance before it runs out of juice. Here are my plans. I am currently exploring all the caves and collecting all Bubble frogs. That is so fun. I already got the complete Satori set, but I want to keep going. After completion, I want to complete all the lightroots in the depths. I also want to complete my battery. With a good battery, I want to complete sky island. Then there is regular Hyrule. Towers and memories can be completed at any time. I did do them early in my playthrough. Once I complete the depths and sky islands, I can become stronger. Then I will be even better at completing the stuff in the regular world. So I would like to complete that. There are shrines, koroks and side quests. I would like to complete that. Then I can beat Ganandorf and beat the game. That is my plan. I don't know if that is going to work. It is worth going after. I am having so much fun. Tears of the Kingdom is an incredible game, once I get the hang of it. I hope my comments help. :)

It's crazy how many good series I missed out on as a kid. I had Sega genesis but I never played any of the Wonder boy games, I had all the Sonic when it came to platformers and I thought they were basically the same. My cousin's had it NES and SNES but they didn't have mega Man they had super Mario and I figured as a young kid that they were basically the same. And for Castlevania I only ever played a little of the first one on NES and it was just way too hard for me I progress very far. So I never realized how much variation and how many mechanics these three game series featured above Sonic and Mario's very simple gameplay.

I love BOTW and wouldn't say that I "shit" on TOTK in the sense that I had 300 hours with lots of fun in it, but it was underwhelming to realize that it was doubling down on BOTW without subtlety. BOTW by itself was a great foundation with lots of potential, TOTK is a first step that struggle to balance reusing things and doing things on its own terms. More ambitious story but the non-linear memories worked better in BOTW, not here. More fleshed out intro and theme to the dungeons, but still repeating basic terminal puzzles. More shrines but proportionally more "blessing shrines" where the challenge is outside but is often skipped without realizing, because I tend to just fly over it. Amazing mechanics but that double down on the player making their own objectives, which became boring for me as the new places to explore were either too familiar, or too lacking when it comes to the undercooked sky islands and repetitive depths.

While I do like TOTK there is a lot that frustrates me about it. The story is good, but the way it is told is terrible. You get it in random order and that can ruin/spoil it if you get the wrong dragon tear early. I also *HATE* the incredibly repetitive cut scenes. The dialog for all of the ancient sages is almost exactly the same. *BORING!* The continuity errors between TOTK and BOTW are bad enough to break the emersion. The reason people use duplication glitches is because gathering materials is a torturously boring, grinding slog that takes hours. There's too much open space with nothing but enemies to fight or Koroks to find. The sky is cool, but there's not enough there. Too many copy/pasted islands, and most of them have nothing on them at all. The depths were interesting for about 15 minutes maybe, but once you realize that there's no real reason to be down there, they get boring, fast. They're just a hard to navigate barren wasteland. Sure, you can find some cool treasure, but is it really worth it? Yiga Schematics and Schema stones can be cool I guess... but the only vehicle you actually need is the two fans and a steering stick hover bike. In fact, I would say that the only interesting thing in the depths are the Frox enemies! I do enjoy TOTK and have put several hours into it, but there's a lot about it that just kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The video hadn't touched on what really felt empty to me: unique locations/worldbuilding, story I'll put in my several few words below! unique locations 1. Lookout landing looked cool the first time I'd entered it, but was disappointed by the size of it when I bought the hyrulean set...the design of the lookout landing felt very bland. it was uninteresting enough that I didn't know there was even a bunker, until about 1/3 of my entire gameplay progress. If it had taken any semblance of design or inspiration from castle town in OOT, or at least a variation equivalent, it would feel immersive and engaging. I've grown to hate the repetitive lookout landing theme by association of uninteresting layout. 2. There aren't any other new hyrulean settlements and/or establishments around the continent except for the meat rock shack (?) in "goro" region (it's 3am), the player-built water race track, and the bolson construction site, all else is nearly the same with little variance; Hateno Village was a very nice change but the settlement felt functionally identical save for 2 major differences. The final TOTK trailer gave a strong theme of "reconstruction" and "kingdom growth", showcased by the large zonal-powered truck and the wagon full of people pulled by link's horse. This alone made me excited to expect these modes of transportation to be used as an excuse to discover a new settlement by chance (transporting hyruleans from point A to B) to their place of work, to their new home in the forest, a small settlement, perhaps one that could've served a nod to Lon Lon Ranch, and would make sense for frequence use of zone vehicles to travel to and fro. the lack of Industrial Revolution among the suprlus boson building materials scattered literally everywhere was a wasted opportunity teased for disappointment. 3. the fallen stone ruins, rocks, etc., stopped feeling unique fairly early into the game. They'd come from the sky, which is far less interesting compared to the surface, with much less to do beyond fly to yet another empty island. The game would've done well with at least one other island half as big as the GSI, and/or as big and/or interactive as the dragonhead island. The depths are unimaginative, the flora and fauna could have been just as pretty or creepy as the sky was pretty, but when moving from point A to B or traveling through the dark, the only notable fauana are the trees. It's decently populated by monsters but there isn't much to suggest they've sustained themselves with any diet aside from the bugs or baby foxes. More bugs would've been cool too! technically number 4., all the etceteras about flora and fauna are redundant, however details would benefit an empty world that feels emptier when you're a player only focused moving toward the next goal. the details tend to remind me to slow down and take in the atmosphere, but the atmosphere wasn't as strong to me as BOTW's was, or maybe it wasn't unique in its own TOTK way, to allure seasoned BOTW players. I found myself avoiding walking on the surface entirely about 1/2 through the game. story 1. the overworld dialogue leaves much to be desired, little/no mention of Link's new arm. Zero discussion of the missing sheikah technology of any sort. zero mention of the divine beasts of which had previously taken a very large amount of space within the 4 regions of hyrule. 2. There are no action cutscenes outside of the main quest, nothing as cinematic or fast as the trailer suggested the game would be. for first-time actions, like pulling out the purah pad for the first time, summoning a sage for the first time, etc., have their own cutscenes. what about cooking for the first time, a closeup cutscene unique to the cooking pot next to the construct? GSI could, pan out camera with link lifting off on a wing for the first time. Little things make the game feel more cinematic and complete, these little things make the game feel BIG, but it wouldn't be an exaggeration. It be a relief compared to my own empty, unemotional gameplay control input. The tears quest memories feel inconsequential because of the lack of stakes (they've already happened, revealing no unique twists other than the one twist. A missed opportunity: the sage's wills' locations could've been hinted at by the mommies themselves or the hyrieglyphics, unless they already do and I'm not aware of this.) and stale because of the lack of moving parts. We only see the characters sit, stand, take a few steps, fall, kneel in the defeat, etc. but it feels very stiff compared to BOTW's memories story. Link and Zelda in BOTW were always doing/finished with/alarmed by a task or mission of a sort, none of it feels like they're staying in one. in TOTK, you can literally SEE the characters standing in one place. The affairs of Royalty aren't much to write home about, they're more for the historians to mull over really, but the action scenes do very little to contrast in physical movement. Ganondorf's transformation was phenomenal, however he too was a victim of the standing syndrome. Even Rauru's sealing was just 2 people standing and talking (in a different pose!)...it overshadowed my enjoyment watching the scene. With love comes hate. I love/hate this game to death! I'm already looking forward to the remake decades into the future and hoping for improvements and/or expansions of the game, remastered graphics, improved hair physics, re-imagined tears cutscenes, cinematics, improved emotional storytelling through Link himself, etc... I could go on. I hope my comment makes sense and/orresonates with others who may've felt similar. Oh, and I enjoyed watching your video! Good content. I love everything TOTK discussions.

Excellent commentary and analysis. Thanks. Now that FF7R2 seems to have also been a dud (for good reason, IMO...I still haven't managed to force myself to finish the slog), S-E is in serious trouble. I feel like the only path forward for them is to stop spending 3-5 years building overblown games meant to capture the "general audience," and reduce the scale of their AAA productions to service specific audiences. Final Fantasy is my favorite video game franchise, but FF16 and FF7R2 aren't what I wanted from either game. I hope FF7R3 won't be a bloated, unfocused monstrosity.

After Sonic & Knuckles, it was an awkward era Sonic was in, but I don't think it was terrible. Yeah, it wasn't the best games, but some of them were alright. Not to mention, all the characters that we could play as. And some of those games are games Sega should try again, like Sonic the Fighters and Sonic R. And it might actually be better than the nostalgia era (2010-2019), which is a better name than the meta era.

Most people just complain about new games nowadays is because their lives are so void of joy and they can't just buy and game and have fun with it anymore. I get you're "reviewing" it but I guarantee if you go back to games 15 years ago that you said were shit, you'd think they're pretty good now because they're dated so that somehow makes them good again and all the new stuff sucks. It's just so annoying. I feel like most people don't even care, they just jump on the band wagon of saying "this game is trash" because then they can feel smarter than everyone else

I can follow and distinguish all the Ys games and their remakes, all the Dragon Slayer and Legend of Heroes games, and even the Final Fantasy/SaGa/Mana spin-offs. Wonder Boy doesn't nearly have as much games as all these franchises, and they still manage to confuse the hell out of me; like for example that there are two distinct Wonder Boy III's, but no Wonder Boy IV, but a Wonder Boy V and Monster World IV. Like, what the actual?

Oof! I felt this way one month in playing it, when it released. I was getting annoyed with always needing to build something. At first it was fun and cool, but then it started to get redundant. 🙈 I switched back to playing to OG ones. It’s been 11 months since I went back to play it. 🙈 It would have been cool to play breath of the wild, but in Zelda’s prospective or even her journey become Sheik. Or even something of the beginning stages of the whole story, like an ancestral prospective. Something that follows the lore, but gives us more well rounded details of the plot. Yet still have Link somehow in the story game play, to not completely separate him from it.

Great retrospective. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap will always be my favorite in the series, as it's also my favorite game of all time. I agree regarding Monster Land. It is NOT fun in comparison to the other titles...it feels unforgivingly hard with the hour glass mechanic, especially the last dungeon, where going the wrong way, or battling the controls to make a precise jump from one sinking block to another can lead to you having to repeat portions of the castle again and again. I wish Sega/Westone/Anyone would create new games for this series...it's truly one of the best.

I’ve thought about factory resetting my golden Zelda Switch and starting over with a 1.0.0 file, but I remember how dumb finding Amibo armor is. I can't believe this clown is expecting the Wii to have HD visuals like a PS3 or Xbox 360. Did he not get the memo? That is NOT what the Wii was about. Honestly a simple fix for me would’ve been to expand the surface map outwards and start there after that initial landing from the Great Sky Island. have the main land of Hyrule Evacuated and cut off with all of its inhabitants fleeing to the outer regions due to an overabundance of gloom ( going to the areas around the map that’s not excessable in BOTW) as well as going to the Depths and/or Sky. Giving us an incentive to explore again and find our lost friends with new themed biomes possible returning Races like Deku, minish, etc. then after a certain point I’m the story we could retake hyrule and explore the TOTK map as well as the new areas
