Not sure if you’re active on here but I now own this Montero. After a days work it no longer sounds like this on startup. Wheels rotted away with the previous owner so she’s got a set of white steelies on there now.

Awesome. What was your solution to getting the ticking to go away? Does it still have the chrome valve covers, crankshaft dampner, and other plated parts?

To engage the 4x4 do you have to put it on park or neutral? Any steps on putting the 4x4.

To the ones who say it sound terrible when it starts up, let me tell you something. I've known of two Monteros, my mom's '91 V6, and my own '90 V6. They both sound like crap when they start up. Its a Montero thing. The ticking clicking sound in the engine goes away after the thing warms up for about 5 min, 10-15 min if its really cold. Monteros of this year span are really finicky cold-starting rigs. Monteros are really solid though. They require a bunch of TLC on the engine and a lot of manual maintenance. Two things to share, as a lot of fellow Montero owners from around 84-1992 will tell you....watch the center bolt to the crank shaft pulley. These things are notorious for the center bolt shearing off and destroying the harmonic balancer as it goes. That may need some attention. The other is, something is sometimes screwy with the idle sensor...mine will rev up to about 2,000/rpms om a cold start and it will require that you sit there and wait for it to slowly climb down and idle at a normal rpm. Basically this Montero sounds identical to the ones I've had experience with, these are GREAT snow rigs...just great all around. But watch the engine components! If you can get your hands on one of these you will not be disappointed! Curious if the owner of this bad boy has had the crank shaft pulley issue before?

From what I hear, the "lifter" tick goes away after it warms up. Seems to be a standard issue...I guess?

THe Champ was based on the Lark and was first produced in 1960, ending in 1964.

Didn't Stude stop making the Champ when they came out with the Hawk series in 1956? Also, I don't remember a Champ with a V-8 only Commanders. The Silver Hawk was the 6 and the Sky Hawk the V-8 while the Golden was a V-8 hardtop
