We are not slick like some churches, but we’re not rough either Our style fits the songs and the people, and differs depending on who is leading and who else is playing, but it still fits together.

Yeah, there to serve the song, and the Lord. To help the congregation, definitely As for playing, I mostly use my first and second fingers. If I use my thumb it’s either as a third finger, or more likely as an ostinato or pedal note. I sometimes use a pick, but more if I want a very percussive feel, or a rhythm that is more intuitive with a pick. (I also play guitar) But mostly I use 1 or 2 fingers. I have developed that where I can do up/down with my fingers and simulate the pick feel, and it grooves more for me, but I am adaptable. I like to use the open E, A and D for octaves with the open E and the higher E on the third string. And unisons on the A and D, this fills out the sound more, and leads to a different feel. I don’t automatically do it every time, but if it fits the songs or we have fewer musians, especially if there is nobody playing keys. But ultimately it is about the song. We have three bass players taking turns, we have different styles, and all of them work. ButI would like to record each one of use on an isolated track, playing the same song and compare them.

It would be nice if someone would have a video in how to play simple bass fills. At the last part of this video, you played the fills, but it would be nice to be shown how to do it. Even though I’ve played bass for 15 years solely in church, I never have seen a video on how to actually play some easy fills.

Lets see cause you always felt like no one cared, cause they had so many clicks that youndidnt fit, cause their is one general pastor and 25 other associates with no fruit or testimony, cause the pulpit looks like a superbowl stage full of light, cause the pastors wife never notice you, I mean the list of this barbaric pratice is absurd,. Jesus the son of God had 12 disciples guess why so he can have relationship with them friends brother sons, real friendship, your mega church expierience ends once you fill that card and they find out you a nobody, unless you are tiding with checks extraordinary amount then they will love ,, I speak from expieri3nce, mega churches are scams...

The thing that resonated the most with me is how much time you took to give that feedback. I think I’m always more interested in cutting to the chase with people and not wasting time with all the pleasantries and, as you could imagine, it’s often not received well. And then if I do try to apply this “feedback framework”, if you will, it’s obvious and transparent so it feels kind of phony. Loving people well doesn’t have to be hard or take a long time, but what this video shows me is that it does take some time-definitely more time than I usually allow for.

I’m in my 40’s and wow this is giving me hope to continue to thrive in God’s Kingdom and all God to continue to purge me in my life. Praise GOD. Embrace what God is doing to all the Godly people in their 40’s.

There is little resources about ministers, leaders in the church and worship leaders to understand the dynamic when a leader falls into sin. There is not much help in these areas. The lack of support in these areas contribute to more church hurt than healing and being fully restored as a whole in Christ Jesus. Pastors and leaders worldwide suffer greatly from unconscious sin or even conscious sin which makes it hard to being fully restored. There is NOT much accountability, unity, transparency and holiness in the leaders or Pastors because pride kicks in causing the person to try to justify the actions and situations. I like how you break it down to deal with the matter of a leader struggling with sin. This is so helpful.

Great information! You mentioned several times that this is intended to be used in conjunction with a drum set. However, we don't have a drum set and only use percussion. (Right now, it's just a cajon with a mic inside, but we are considering adding some elements.) Do you have a guide or some tips for folks who don't have drums and are using percussion exclusively?

I must admit, I read his post and I’m in that category of vocalists. I’ve always struggled with why I’m not given lead parts while others are. Occasionally some places have let me lead while most of the time I’ve been told “you’re not quite ready to be a lead vocalist” but I have always aspired to be a worship leader. So let me just ask, what defines if one is ready to lead songs and how does one go about getting there? I feel like that’s something that’s never been clearly communicated to me.

Love this, Alex! I'm planning to "level up" the referrals / checking with other leaders & senior pastor as to holistic health. Excited to see the percussion setup - I have found that "cajon" is a semi-entry level position, but I'm thinking drum pad should come soon. I've just been as minimally tech savvy to cue that up, but here's to 2025...! Love the interest night & more "non-threatening activities". Does the church have a ministry interest night, or did you set that up solo?

I'm in a fairly new church plant. I started helping with leading worship about 3 years ago. I lead about 2 Sunday's per month. It's just me on my guitar. Most times when I lead, no one sings along, claps, or does does anything at all. It really discourages me and makes me wonder if the Lord has really called me to it. I'm open to any advice the Lord would lead you to give me. I appreciate your ministry and miss seeing you at South Bay.

In CCM, as far as bass goes... stay low and in the pocket. Only time you really need to run up the fretboard is if you are doing a fill that you need to cut through the mix. People try to make bass a complicated thing. Lock up with the drummer on 1 and 3... don't over play.

After 20 years in the corporate world, and 12 years as a volunteer vocalist, I'm feeling a call to full time worship ministry. What is the basic foundation that needs to be laid to allow me to launch into full time ministry?

What are your thoughts on signaling during the songs? Do you use vocal cues, hand signs, something different?

E is the root note. Therefore It’s in the key of E. At the end of the day though if everyone is playing the right chords at the right time, does it really matter what key it’s in?
