well explained! Recessions are an unavoidable part of the economic cycle; all you can do is prepare for them and plan accordingly. I graduated into a slump (2009). My first job after graduating from college was as an aerial acrobat on cruise ships. Today, I work as a VP for a global corporation, own three rental properties, invest in stocks and businesses, run my own company, and have increased my net worth in the last four years.

How do we set up reinvesting the dividends? Can we reinvest dividends from several stocks and funds to go to specific fund such as SCHD?
@Fidelity
@Fidelity Күн бұрын
Hi, Richard. Thanks for reaching out to Fidelity. These are great questions. At this time, dividends paid out from stocks and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) can either be set to automatically reinvest back into the original position or be paid as cash to the core position in the account; however, we do offer the ability to have Fidelity mutual fund dividends automatically deposited into a different Fidelity mutual fund position owned in your account. For example, if you own Fidelity mutual funds A, B, and C, and A pays a dividend, you can set your account to have that dividend from A directed into B or C. On Fidelity.com, you are able to view and update your dividend elections for a single position or for the account as a whole. You can update your dividend and capital gains elections on the website by following these steps after logging in: 1. Select the "Accounts & Trade" menu 2. Choose "Account Features" 3. Click "Manage" next to the "Dividends & Capital Gains" link under the "Brokerage & trading" section Please let us know if you have any additional questions!

Can I rollover my previous Roth account to Fidelity Roth IRA? If yes, how do I do that lets say Roth account is with previous employer.
@Fidelity
@Fidelity 2 күн бұрын
Hey there, Peter! We appreciate you reaching out and want to help. As you mention both a Roth IRA and an account through your employer, we encourage you to verify your exact account type before moving forward to verify you complete the correct steps. Generally, an account through an employer is a workplace plan, such as a 401(k). If you have a Roth IRA, you can process a TOA request to move the funds to Fidelity by first opening a Roth IRA with us. Then, you can typically complete a Transfer of Assets (TOA) process entirely online. Full TOAs usually take 5-7 business days to complete, while partial transfers normally take 3-5 business days. You can start this process online through the page linked below. Transfer an Account to Fidelity: www.fidelity.com/customer-service/transfer-assets While Fidelity does not charge fees to send or receive assets through the TOA process, your sending firm may charge a TOA or closeout fee. If insufficient cash is available in your transferring account, this fee may be applied as a debit once the assets are received in the Fidelity account. Next, if you determine your Roth is within an employer plan, such as a 401(k), you can complete a rollover to transfer the funds. Typically, if the workplace plan you have holds pre-tax assets, they will go to a Rollover IRA, while after-tax 401(k) assets are commonly rolled into a Roth IRA. Note, if you already have one or both aforementioned IRAs containing assets, rolling external funds into those accounts could risk commingling. Please consider that commingled assets may not be eligible to be rolled into a new employer plan in the future. Alternatively, you can roll the assets into a newly established Roth and Rollover IRA if you think a future rollover to a new employer plan may occur. If you wish to proceed and roll funds from a 401(k) to an IRA, check out the link below for the complete process, which includes opening a Fidelity account, contacting your old provider, and depositing the money. 401(k) Rollover: www.fidelity.com/retirement-ira/401k-rollover-ira-steps Please note that Fidelity does not provide legal or tax advice, and we highly encourage you to speak with a qualified tax advisor to review your situation before moving forward. If you have any additional questions or need further clarification, don't hesitate to follow up with us. We're happy to help!

I am thinking of adding an FBTC recurring contribution account to my Fidelity portfolio. However, by looking at the Bitcoin chart for the last 3-4 years I do not see anyone has made any money on it. In fact, unless you were able get in early, like 2020, likely a whole lot people lost money on Bitcoin than those who made money. You mention many S&P stocks have higher volatility. You did not give any example of an equity that has a "market cap" that is comparable. Neither have you considered that Bitcoin generated a lot more euphoria than many of these equity, hence generated way more interest from the retail investors. For the average investors, Bitcoin has been a far worse investment than any of the index ETFs or funds, IMO.

I would argue brokerage accounts are taxed advantaged - if you generate long term capital gains. Less tax than ordinary income which is what is generated from traditional 401k or IRA. Although forced distributions could be tax inefficient sometimes

A long time ago I added tax differed annuity to my portfolio at Fidelity. Is it possible to convert it to my Roth IRA? If I do would I be made to pay federal income tax on the transaction? Roth IRAs weren’t available when I bought my annuity.
@Fidelity
@Fidelity 5 күн бұрын
That's a great question, James! The ability to transfer your annuity directly to a Roth IRA depends on how your annuity is held with us. If it is a qualified retirement account, you can process the transfer between the two accounts. That transfer would be considered a Roth Conversion, a taxable event. Any pre-tax funds that you convert to a Roth are viewed as income in the year you complete the conversion and would be taxed at your ordinary income rate. You can learn more about a conversion here: www.fidelity.com/viewpoints/wealth-management/insights/roth-ira-conversion. You can contact us by phone to speak with an Annuity Services representative and review your specific annuity and distribution choices. Annuity representatives are available Mon - Fri, 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET. However, as Fidelity cannot provide tax advice, you'll want to connect with a tax professional to understand how a withdrawal may affect your situation or tax liability. Contact Us: www.fidelity.com/customer-service/phone-numbers/overview?selectTab=1 Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Mega backdoor Roth 401(k) contributions - it's not conversions. It may use a Roth conversion as the second step, but it's a way to make a large contribution you couldn't otherwise make - thus the "Mega backdoor".

Good discussion. Cash Cushion: You should have broadened the discussion to list non-market related assets/insurance products that can help to generate income after market crashes and downturns. As for example, tapping equity from a reverse mortgage, tapping the cash value of a whole life insurance and renting out real estate properties/rooms. The other sensitive issue is living within your means and becoming aware of risks for eldery people to be swindled of their assets/cash by relatives, friends and criminals. Having annuities and professional services to help manage a estate may be helpful to minimize risks from having "trusted" people taking you down to the cleaners. Bucket Approach: In my case as a federal retiree, having a defined benefits pension, other assets and cash outside my 401k (defined contribution plan) and knowledge of economics, enabled me to take decisive action during covid to pursue a 5 year term immediate annuity to generate supplemental income to substitude social security payments postponed until age 70. This also enabled me to avoid selling 401k stocks during the Covid Swan and inflation meltdowns. A bucket approach to retirement is definitely a strategy to help you sleep well during turbulent markets and access to cash flows.

Can I have both an FSA and an HSA?
@Fidelity
@Fidelity 11 күн бұрын
Hi there, Bebo! Thanks for reaching out. You can typically only contribute to one type of plan in a year at a time unless your employer offers a limited-purpose flexible spending account (LPFSA). An LPFSA is an employer-sponsored pre-tax account that can used to pay for qualified dental and vision expenses for employees enrolled in a Health Savings Account (HSA) -eligible health plan. To further expand, HSAs can be opened by individuals with eligible high-deductible health plans while, in contrast, FSAs are exclusively available as an employer benefit. Accordingly, you are not able to open an FSA on Fidelity.com. We have a handy article on our website here that explains in more detail here: www.fidelity.com/learning-center/smart-money/hsa-vs-fsa Thanks for reaching out; we hope you have a great day!
