I pretty much stopped reading after my 20s, getting heavily into film, tv, and gaming. Having recently retired early, I decided to get back into it, focusing mostly on science fiction which was always my favorite genre (along with magical realism...e.g. Gabriel Garcia Marquez), and I decided to read all of the "best" in roughly chronological order. I just finished this book and feel like it is something I might have written in high school (and it coincidentally was published the year I graduated). Not that it was badly written, just that the main character seemed to look at life like an angsty, horny teenager. I usually prefer more noble...or at least sympathetic...protagonists. Overall, I can't rate this nearly as highly as most of the books I read leading up to it (my favorite so far being Word for World is Forest by Le Guin). I did enjoy the therapy sessions taking place in the "present" juxtaposed with the rest taking place in the "past", but it was a little like ending each "past" chapter with "...and something bad is going to happen".

Hello, I just got your booktube, and I think it great! My goal is to read 4 to 5 books a month, but I don't worry too much about my unread TBR. However, i want to control my book purchase under 5 each month. Hope by now you are satisfied with your job. Love from Taiwan.

I just read Lidiya’s The Broken Queen which is set in the same world and watched her video about the world she created. She admits that her books are quirky and don’t fall neatly into a category like cozy romance or fantasy or so on and instead play around somewhere in the middle. That being said, I did like The Broken Queen where I think she does a better job of simply allowing the book to be what it is instead of trying to force it into a genre/subgenre. Doll Girl Meets Dead Guy seems to fall short in some ways because of how it was branded, which is a real struggle for a lot of authors who write quirky books that don’t neatly fit in a box.

My librarian has me on speed dial or something. Worst, she knows when I finish work. Anywho, she called me, and I picked up the latest Stephen King book on the way home from work. Read the Afterwards and a few pages of the first story. The title is from a Leanard Cohan song. The first story? It's about old guys. I hope King doesn't make this a habit. Hope all is well with you Beck, and if not, I'm sorry.

I am worried about her too.Been a couple of months since she made a video. King can be great but sometimes he can be hit or miss.He cranks books out too fast.I like his older works.

Great to see this one getting a good SPFFBO score as I thought it was beautifully written. It tackled some difficult topics and described a "mature" relationship which is an uncommon theme in fantasy [though perhaps that reflects what I tend to read]. (Aside: I'm guessing you'll be making a bit of space on the shelf behind you for The Book that Broke the World soon. :-)

I get super stressed at all the Readalongs I sign up for, never mind the stress 💥 that Readathons induce! 😅 I just struggle to fit everything in, but when I’ve made a commitment I don’t want to let folks down by failing to complete the homework assignment. So it becomes a thing, every time. But I’m finally getting back to my own picks and I’m So Excited By The Options Yes I Am!!! 🤗 Now I have been holding that same 830 page brick and I can confirm the discomfort levels at times! 🫳Actual proper LOL at the “but I do find that these are fairly quick reads.” I wish I had your skillz 😜 But in my comments oh TLOATF I too mentioned the history lessons and discussions rather than any actual adventuring. I’ve even untagged that mood from my notes, which seems quite a step. LOL, I just whipped up my copy to see where I have got to vs your almost final update… it looks about the same to me, before your final push on the Thursday evening.

I think I speak for most when I say we would all watch your vlogs even if you only read one book a month. Your vlogs are always such fun and engaging that we would tune in just for a catch up with you.☺️ I would also like to say how much I enjoy your book reviews. I've loved hearing about all the self published books in particular. Your reviews are so professionally done and wanted you to know your hard work writing them are appreciated. ☺️ The saving challenges look great fun, Becky!!
