Been there, fantastic place!! The trolleybus ride was so nostalgic, couldn’t get off it. If anybody is up that way don’t miss it. Staff are really knowledgeable Only criticism is the cafe is way too small even during the week.

What was the significance of the 33 back then?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus5 сағат бұрын
They were short of DMU's so used loco hauled trains on the Valley Lines.....

Interesting to see the 71. I believe they could run under the wires at Hither Green back in the 70's

What a great collection of old buses. Good to see how the trolleybuses was connected to the wires. I read that back in the day if the connection was broken the driver had to get his long pole out (no pun intended) and try to put it back on the wires while holding all the traffic up.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus5 сағат бұрын
Putting the boom back up was the conductors job... towards the end of Trolleybus operation, quite a few were missing and you would have to wait for another Trolleybus to come along in order to get back on the juice!

At 6 minutes and 54 seconds, the area briefly looked like the New Road in Chatham, just before the Gibraltar Hill turnoff, before you go over the viaduct.

Proper sounding fire engines ! The siren really wasn’t taken as seriously then as the two tone horns (blues & twos) whereas nowadays you just don’t hear two tone horns except on the railways, it’s all sirens, albeit, they have gotten much better. Also back when this was filmed, we still made purpose built fire engines in Britian, not like today where they are mostly based on an existing truck chassis.

Nice collection, do you happen to know when the last 59 stock operated on the piccadilly? I read somewhere that the last northern line 38 stock operated on 14 april 1978, so I guess it must have been around then...
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus4 күн бұрын
The 59s should have finished before Heathrow Central opened in December 1977 but around 3 or so trains of 59 stock were still running.... Instead of expensive plastic blinds, LT had Aldenham Bus Works produce some paper & linen ones (like the bus blinds in use back then) to fit to those last few 59s.... I believe they all finished in early 1978 and were transferred to the Northern.....

Nowadays the piccadilly line is apparently speed restricted to 45mph. Would love to know if the max speed was any higher back in the day...
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus4 күн бұрын
Yes, the 73 stock could do around 55mph on the higher speed sections..... I've known A60's do over 70 on the Met Main......
@limeyfox5 күн бұрын
The 1960 stock had rear-view wingmirrors for the driver. I’ve noticed Swiss trains have this on some of the metre gauge lines. Seems a no-brainer!

@TrainBusFan066 күн бұрын
6:07 look at the speed at which the 59 approaches the platform......not really the sort of thing you would expect to see from a 95! My guess is because the 95s were much newer and full of new technology the drivers preferred to handle them more cautiously, whereas the 59s were on their last legs hence the drivers didn't seem to mind thrashing them about in service. Crazy to think that the 95s have now been around for over 25 years, they still look almost new today, especially with their recent refurbishment...

Nice footage I particularly enjoyed the bouncy ride at the end. But at 7:35 what is the purpose of the arch extending over the track? And at 8:26 where does that alignment of former track lead to?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus20 сағат бұрын
The arch carries cables across the tracks, and the second one was at one time a connecting line to British Rail lines. This line had links at Shoreditch, into Liverpool Street, and at new Cross and New Cross Gate as well, the ELL was used by a lot of freight and some excursion trains until the early 1960s......

A lot more freight coming thru Willesden back in the 70's. Always 37 stratford locos. Hauling scrap i guess on the way to Vic Berry's

Fantastic vid. Travelled from Richmond to Broadstreet back in the early 70's. Seem to remember that at Dalstone Junction there was a freight only line to Stratford
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus20 сағат бұрын
It was freight only until around 1979 when the GLC sponsored an extension to the North Woolwich to Stratford Low Level DMU service. When Broad Street closed, the North London Line service was diverted that way, after the line was electrified.....

Might be a weird question but one of the two guards panels were not working for some reason, the train could not operate with passengers at all right? No door controls in the driving cab?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus7 күн бұрын
No door controls for the driver back then (they are now under One Person Operation) so if a Guards position had trouble with the panel the train could not remain in service. Except, if you were the last train at night, you would have to use the Guards position at the front car, the rules said you always had to use the one in the rear car, in case of a breakaway, or a defect with the train (ie cutting out the rear trip-cock).......
