It was horrible . The miracle surviving stories are relief to everyone. Knowing something of the many who were taken from the world helps to know what there is to know about people who we grieve loosing for no reason because of murderer terrorists. In the late 90s, going into 01, the pilots would always let me into the cockpit anytime I flew to show me all the cool stuff! I flew in august of 01, and then in December of 01. The difference was insane. Your family couldn’t all come to the gate with you anymore, and I recollect like the national guard being at airport security, or the ones doing the security checks after it all happened before TSA. Am I remembering correctly? This is LAX. I was only elementary school age when 9/11 happened.

Well, as soon as Mr. Ben Smiley, one of the FAA top brass, heard about one person being stabbed on the American Airlines 11 (at least) as the terrorists did their suicide mission towards the WTC towers, he had a gut feeling that he had to do something to avoid further damage in American air space. He thought of doing the nationwide ground stop but held back. However...... When he heard that the first WTC tower was hit, he thought of doing it but again he held back on shutting down the whole American air space. But not until the 2nd WTC tower was hit, the Pentagon was hit, and then, United 93 was hijacked, and both towers came down in NY - he did the unthinkable - SHUT DOWN THE WHOLE CIVILIAN USA AIRSPACE! NO PLANES WERE ALLOWED TO TAKE OFF, AND ANY PLANE STILL IN THE AIR MUST LAND IMMEDIATELY AT THE NEAREST AIRPORT - NO ANDS, IFS OR BUTS. Ben even took the close-down of the airspace further - no international incoming flights would be allowed access to any USA airspace and were forced to turn back and turn away!

With the flight 40 miles North of NY they had 10 mins or less to get the F15's on site. It would have taken Otis 10 mins to intercept. Therefore only if they scrambled instantly did they have a chance. Based on the speed of these conversations, they had no chance to intercept from Otis.

There was a black woman who worked on the 92nd floor who survived. Just because we don't hear every story doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. A woman from the 101st floor also survived. You have to remember that each tower held thousands of people. I recently saw a video of people actually descending into the plaza main floor and then exiting out through the mall. There were so many of them. Who knows which floor they were coming from. Not all of them have publicly shared their story. I bet there are even more videos than we've seen.
