Even though AMES collapsed it was because they absorbed all the debt from buying HILLS which was settled with debt but AMES seemed to be a well ran company that educated it's employees in Retail 101 and A plus customer service. WALMART could seriously take a lesson from AMES in that respect. I think even Sam Walton is rolling in his grave the way his company is being managed.

Observation windows like the one at 3:29 were very common in discount department stores back in the day. I wonder why today’s stores, such as Walmart and Target, do not have these windows.

Just by the looks of their stores & knowing they were across half the country (Because they were in 25 States combined) They feel like you're neighbor that will treat you nice & not become evil because the founder was no longer in control & the next generation of them took over with the fame handed to them over there head. Ames, Bradlees, Hills, Caldor, Kmart & much more were better stores than whatever the heck we have as a leading store.

I had cops called on me for "Flim Flam". They ended up having to explain to a poorly-trained cashier that it's perfectly honest when somebody "overpays" in coins to get even fewer coins back. I had $2.18 Kiwi boot laces. I give the cashier a $20, but also asked to break a quarter .18/.25 instead of eighty two cents in coins banging about. The cops were decent; poor cops had to "train" the cashier to comprehend that 2/20 + 18/25=less coins when I'm in beach trunks and a Dead Pool Tshirt.

Me and several friends worked in a national supermarket chain in the deli Dept. When it was to close up the deli department we’d use ammonia and bleach mixed together to clean the floor. Needless to say that didn’t go over very well with the store manager and customers. But hey, who cares it got the job done. So what if the store had to be evacuated?

Worked in a similar type of establishment and when we got bored we broke open bags of mothballs and let them loose all over the store.

Safety first, but that didn't stop the chain from going out of business. This store kept having a lot of safety issues, even though there were few, or no customers. :/
