The parliamentary committees which inspected the Scottish universities in the 19th century were shocked by how UN-like Oxford and Cambridge they were and tried their best to bring them into the fold. Students mostly lived apart, in their own rooms with a family or just a landlady, not in colleges or dorms. They did not have lunch or dinner together: the horror! Most of the time they went en masse to daily lectures, then studied on their own. There was no compulsory chapel any more. Every course was forced to switch out one of the lectures for a tutorial. A century later, it was noticeable that the English kids were the ones who spoke up in tutorials (of a dozen or more students), while the Scots kept their heads down and hoped not to be noticed.

The carved stone coat of arms above the arch (just over 2 minutes in) was carved by George Gregory, my great-grandfather. I have a photo of it in the workshop before it was incorporated into the building. If anyone knows when the building was constructed it would be very helpful in dating my photograph.
