😊 Great video ~ Flip up sights are the first thing a person should install on there AR15. I know that iron sights are old school, but they seem to work just fine in the Vietnam war. 👍 I am just honoring are Vietnam veterens and thanking them for there service.

I don't know how I'm just now seeing this, but what a great video. The best part is the smile on your son's face at the end. The two of you did more than build an AR, you strengthened the bond between Father and Son.

My local gun shop here in Washington State had Anderson lowers for $30. Then our legislature went and passed the horrible “assault weapons” ban. Now they are illegal to buy here. I should’ve bought a dozen of them beforehand.

Very good video! Thanks for taking the time to make it. A couple things to consider next time you do this: 1. Add a drop or so of oil to each moving part BEFORE installing them. (Springs/detents for pivot and takedown pins, the pins themselves, trigger parts where metal meets metal, buffer, buffer spring and retainer spring/pin, etc.). This really makes the gun work more smoothly and reliably. 2. DON’T hammer on the trigger guard ears unless they are reinforced. This is a notoriously weak point on the aluminum lower and they can snap right off, ruining the lower. Insert the trigger guard, then lay the lower on a half-deck or so of playing cards (underneath where the pin goes in). This will support the ears while you tap the pin in. There is also a special vise tool that makes installation easy so you don’t have to use the hammer at all. Just look up “Trigger Guard Tool”. I am a professional gunsmith and have put together dozens of these. PSA makes a good quality product and solid parts kits. Have fun!

I like the rear placement spacing tip. Gets it as far back as possible but allows you to work the charging handle without the sight (when stowed) interfering with your fingers.

Next project should be making your own lower from an 80% lower. Per the online reviews, best jig for it by orders of magnitude is the Gen 3 Easy Jig from 80% Arms. You'll need a handheld router compatible with its baseplate ($75 - $125), good hand drill without any runout or chuck wobble (usually from abusing its spindle wallowing out holes), and a garage type workshop plus a shop vacuum to suck up all the chips. DON'T do it on your kitchen table! It produces aluminum chips faster than a power miter or table saw does sawdust. Inform yourself about the 6061-T6 aluminum billet vs 7075-T6 forged aluminum receivers, and the strength differences of the two alloys before selecting the 80% upper. Plenty of online companies selling 80% AR-15, AR-10 and AR-9 lowers, and one that's Type III Hard Anodized will have a finish (except for the pocket you mill out) that's the same as other anodized receivers. The average user doesn't need to have the milled out part anodized or Cerakoted (especially with a 7075-T6). It's not going to be subjected to the same abuse, heavy use and environments as a "Duty Rifle" or a military one. Did a cost analysis on them. Don't expect this to be cheaper than buying your own lower, stripped or complete. It's not, even if you build a half-dozen. If you enjoy building stuff, building your own firearm could be the ultimate DIY project. I strongly discourage using a polymer lower. They're not strong enough and eventually break (easy to find examples of this online in reviews of them). The weak spot is around the buffer tube ring and where it transitions to the rest of the lower. They eventually crack and the buffer tube snaps off if not detected.

If you don't support the trigger guard ears when pounding in the roll pin, you can easily break the ears off and ruin the lower. Not hard to find rubber coated pliers handles of something similar to support the lower ear and you MUST keep the trigger guard in place to support the upper one while starting and driving the roll pin. I've seen lowers others have broken and ruined. Bolt Catch Roll Pin: I use a round toothpick with the tip cut off as a "slave pin" inserted from the forward side to hold the bolt catch in place while driving the roll pin in from the rear side. If you ever have to remove the bolt catch, drive it all the way through from the rear side. Don't try to drive it back out from the front. Roll Pins in General: Always helps to put a bit of gun grease or gun oil on a roll pin to help lube it a bit as you're driving it.

The castle nut for the buffer tube (receiver extension) needs to be torqued to 40 foot pounds..Then staked in two places..
@feskymaloon1439
@feskymaloon1439 7 ай бұрын
I agree, but this is a subject of some controversy. Some reputable gunsmiths insist that staking is unnecessary if the castle nut is properly torqued. There are a few videos here on KZfaq on the subject, including ones where they put the rifle through hundreds of rounds to prove that the castle nut hasn’t budged. I still stake all of them.

Gunsmiths are not trained Colt armorers who wrote the TDP for the military M4 rifle..The threads on the castle nut, receiver extension, receiver itself, must be class 2 or 3, coated with Aeroshell 64 grease, torqued to 40 ft lbs and staked in two spots..The military has put millions if not billions of rounds through the M4 platform and understands what the best method is.. This is like the same old lame argument some BCG manufacturers claiming the gas key only needs thread locker and does not need to be staked..The TDP spec is there for a reason, decades and millions of rifles being used in the harshest conditions and treatment has taught the military a lot with what works and doesn't..Believe what you want...@@feskymaloon1439

No do not fucking install backup sights flipped around the wrong way. They go one way. Also the rear sight is supposed to fold onto the smooth space above the charging handle. That is why the rear sight is shaped that way. There's no reason to reduce sight radius

LOL, after watching the bolt catch assembly, I was worried. I taped up the receiver, and put it in one of those littttel swivel vices to hold it steady, and also hold it in contact with the bench. I started the pin first, then put in the spring, plunger, and bolt catch. Much to my suprise, the roll pin went in the very first try. Not a single swear was needed!

Thank you for your assistance on this. I'm up in Austin, we had that "Snowmageddon" too and this year we felt we needed to get an alternate heat plan. 🙄 "They" say prices on natural gas are going to get ugly this year. QUESTION?? Do you by chance know if this is the same as Sengoku?? They look identical, even the box. 👀 I just received mine today and put it together, but I can't see if there is a wick inside or not. Do you have any advice?
@waltermacal1575
@waltermacal1575 Жыл бұрын
It certainly does look the same, if it is the same, there is probably a wick already installed, everyone I’ve seen has had one pre installed. They are down inside so they are somewhat hard to see until you light it. In my video about 13:50 you can see what the wick looks like as I light it. Worst case scenario it doesn’t have one… You can install one, watch this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7Jjipllvqy5iKc.html. Best wishes and stay warm this winter!

Great father and son project! I bought a Anderson Manufacturing A/R kit that came with a complete lower and complete upper, all I had to do was put them to each other and push the 2 pins in. It also came with a Vortex Red Dot optic all for $599.00 from my gun dealer. They also sell one without optics but comes with open iron sights for $499.00. It was decent deal since the optics are around $200 separately. The rifles are cheap but the ammo is still expensive.

Yikes, breaking an ear would stink. I have built about 30-40 over the years (I’m a former FFL dealer), I have never broken one. I have heard of ppl who have, so it’s not bad advice.

@@waltermacal1575 Same here. I've built near that many...but; that is the weakest point during a build. If something is gonna break that is it. Just trying to save our friends a little heart ache....Also guys ....always support your work with a block that will help keep those ears in place.
