It's called a sliding bevel. Very useful to transfer across exact angles.

Thank you for this!!! My boys have been asking for separate beds for a long time (they decided they are way to old for bunk beds) but I couldn’t afford to get them new ones. I was searching up “can you chainsaw bunk beds in half” on you tube last night, and this video was the first to come up. WE HAVE THAT EXACT BED!!! What a great idea this was! And so much better then simply chainsawing them apart. Had my brother come help me today, and now we have two beautiful single beds for the boys to have their own space! Thank you sooooo much!

Glad the video helped! My boys got older and wanted separate beds too. That's why I started searching for a solution. Feels good to reuse the bunk bed while keeping their old scribbles and stickers 😄

Interesting! You probably have to remove a few inches from one end of the pull out section so that it fits under the single bed.

We are moving and I was thinking of leaving the bunkbed in the apt, but our landlord said we have to get it out. My problem was that it would not fit through the doorway. I thought of just cutting in in half and throwing it away, but then I figured I could make it into 2 beds. I searched and found your link to this tutorial! Thank your for making it into a video! It will help a lot! I am excited to work on the kids bed this weekend!😅

Thanks! I don't think this would be good for 2 end pieces, as the pin parts would be very weak. But maybe it would work if you're not going to put any weight or force on it.

Nice, but your sawing could use a few pointers. First, unstable work surface is in large part at fault for the inaccuracy of sawing, your bench simply wiggles too much. Secong, you clamp the work piece too high in the vise, creating even more vibrations when cutting. Put the board as low as possible to the jaws, then make the cut. Third, saw along your lines in triangles before you get the knack for dovetails. Start with top line then slowly saw down along the face in a triangle and only then finish the cut at the back of the board, the tails will fit straight of the saw.

Hi Petr, thanks for your comments! Yeah my workbench is VERY unstable, but I'm waiting to move my shed and build a proper bench which will hopefully solve a lot of my problems. I'll improve my sawing techniques as per your advise too. Usually when I cut in triangles, I find that the face where the 2 cuts meet are not flush because I still drift when sawing. Something I'm keen to improve as I go!

great job. Will it be stronger by adding one or two dowels ? I will make the same joint but on a 30cm wide wood panel (for my dinner table) and not sure the glue will be enough. Thanks for your answer.

The thickness of the legs is 19mm. Before tapering the width is 42mm.

Thanks for your comment! I find that I get more enjoyment when I stop chasing perfect cuts. My angles aren't consistent, cuts aren't square and lots of other imperfections. But I'm really excited to give the box to my mom 😃 Good luck with your project!

A great video, can I suggest you make your workbench more rigid and you will find fine detail work with chisels and planes more accurate and easily executed. You have a lot of bounce and that is cushioning blows with mallet to the chisel and because its not rigid when working with the hand plain it is skipping when you use a push stroke. I had the same problems until I beefed up my workbench and honestly the difference is incredible. Good luck to you and keep posting

Thanks for the comment! Yeah the workbench situation is really annoying especially when planing. It's affecting my posture because sometimes I have to rest a foot on one of the table legs to keep it from jumping up. I will be moving my woodworking setup from the garage to a backyard shed in a few months, hopefully I get to build a basic but sturdy bench. Appreciate the support :)
