That's how I started! By watching your "Back to basics" It gave me confidence to do the church floral arrangements when the previous person left. I've probably watched every single video! Thank you so much!

Is your foam free of poisons? Here in the USA those flowers do not grow in the gardens at the same time. Do they in your country or are you buying from the store

Hi there, thanks for watching one of my videos. Unfortunately no foams are free of toxins, not even the environmentally friendly versions. I'm in the UK and most of these flowers are from local supermarkets because the tutorial is to help arrangers learn floral design if they don't have access to a florist shop or don't grow their own. You'll find a range of educational videos here, explaining about all the different methods of construction, different foam, wire netting etc. you'll also find lots of information about sustainable arranging, locally grown and imported blooms. Great to see you on the channel and actively participating in the comments section.

It’s too hot here to do anything much today so thought I’d see if there was anything new on your channel and this video was there to watch, missed it last year. What a fabulous design, love green and white, it’s made me feel nice and cool, and lucky me I have plenty of strelitzia leaves and aspidistra so will have a play with something like this. As always thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge.

Thank you Sharon, I’ve lost all my hebes, I know it’s a lot hotter here in Southern Spain but they are in the garden centres in the sun so I’m giving up on those which is a pity, I also need to move my Fatsia as that’s getting burnt each summer but it survives thank goodness.
@sharondower
@sharondower 3 күн бұрын
@bottlegardenUK also said she'd lost of her Hebes, I've done a little research and if it was after 2022 winter, its because the temperatures were too low, although you aren't in the UK so not sure if your winters are cold enough! Definitely move that Fatsia, give it some dappled shade and it should preform better.

Great video, I have soooo much fatsia but the leaves are very pale green and look to insipid. I need to sort that out. Not sure if it needs more shade or food. All my Hebe died about 4 years ago and I wasn’t too surprised. But talking to a local garden centre apparently a lot of people had also lost theirs too. So I didn’t replace it in case it was a disease or virus. Maybe need to try again. I love my limelight hydrangeas, big heads just wait until it’s fully open before cutting. I used alum when I cut them, which is a pickling spice. I find my ferns are a godsend for foliage - I know you say people struggle to find foliage if they haven’t got a wholesale account, but a few ferns and hosta. They brighten up dark corners and are prolific.
@sharondower

I did a bit of research for my Fatsia that are also pale in colour, but I couldn't decide what the solution was as I've read to much conflicting information and then my husband accidentally stood on it when repairing the fence, so I don't need to worry anymore!!!😂

That's an interesting design Sharon. Whats the widest you can come out on either side and how do you know this, or rather how do you know when to stop? Interesting the way the flowers are slightly on their sides, and you don't get that visual impact, I guess this is only in Contemporary designs? I'm cautions about placing materials in on a slant as they often look as your design is falling over. I guess experiences is required for doing this. Thanks I really love this one. You have used your materials very well.
@sharondower
@sharondower 4 күн бұрын
This is where you need to apply the 3:5:8 rule, find a measurement, for example the length of the basket and multiply by the number on the Fibonacci sequence. You don't need to face flowers forward in any type of arranging not just contemporary, Flowers in nature don't all face forward, we turn flowers to create less visual impact and to make your eye move through the arrangement from small to large. Hope that helps

Sharon your critique was excellent, helpful and informative. I had hoped to submit a design the other week but sadly whilst doing the arrangement one of my five rose fell completely apart so the design didn’t work at all, I was very disappointed as they were table flowers for my husbands birthday. Dear Sharon, Thank you so much for your wonderful information floral videos. They have helped me so much. I have found in my Balloon Decor business that. Clients request flowers to go along with balloon 😅designs. I tell them I don't know what I'm doing withflower, they let ask me to try! I am enjoying using ypur design concepts in designing my Balloon Decor. I have come to a problem. I have found that you've havent done a video on floral arch. I am trying apply your rules to the arch. It is an arch that is like a half arc. I Was going to make it wider at the base and get thinner as it goes up. I am unsure of where my focal point flowers should be? Should I put Larger flowers on bottom 1/3 and use smaller flowers going up? Or should I put Larger flowers in middle all the way up arc, but not in a straight line 😊 and smaller flowers on the outside. Do you have arch videos? This arch is for a wedding, it will be artificial flowers for ceremony and then reception. I have months to practice and get it correct. I am considering size, fit through doors, well built to handle transporting. If it looks good hopefully re-use to rent out in future. So nervous, I dont want to ruin anyones wedding. You are an awesome teacher. Hoping you have arch videos. Thank you! Ellen
@sharondower
@sharondower 4 күн бұрын
Hi Ellen, I don't have an arch on the channel, I tend to keep proper commercial floristry off KZfaq as there is so much to learn and can't be taught in a short tutorial. I do online coaching if you want to book a one to one session but my advice would be to look at lots of other arches from different florists, there are so many different styles. Yes you can do larger at the bottom, this is the style I like but you can also spread out the flowers evenly from top to bottom with larger flowers in the centre and smaller to the outside. Don't underestimate how many flowers you will need as arches take a lot of flowers and foliage. Also consider will it be seen from the back and sides, as you may need extra flowers to cover the back.

@@sharondower Hi Sharon. I can't take credit. It's a song by Peter Allen that was in the movie All That Jazz. It's a NYC thing to say it but it's true when it comes to floral design. I saw one of your recent videos where you said your friends ask you why you make these old arrangements. Nonsense. They are the classics. It's good to branch out, maybe do a Dutch Flemish type of thing but what you do and teach actually sells in a shop, for weddings and events. And as you know, that's crucial when studying this art form. I watch all your videos, I love your work, I love the way you teach, and I feel that I can always see something new in something I've done a million times before. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
