At least they had a railway then, despite the terrible deprivation. Beautiful scenery, but scenery does not feed a population.

The reason Madden was eager to kill Coll was that Coll in his kidnapping spree kidnapped Madden's right-hand man, Big Frenchy LeMange, and Madden had to ransom his assistant. This is related in the movie, "Cotton Club," as well as Paul Sann's entertaining book, "Kill the Dutchman."

Just read about him in 'The Execution, Life and Times of Patrick O'Donnell' Very good. Not sure about 'hero' or even that the murder of the man he killed was anything but a hot headed error of judgement. He should not have been hanged for killing the informer but it was 1883... you kill you hang.

@@huub1989 Checked this out and it's a tad confusing. De valeras mother was called Catherine Coll and was from Bruree in Co Limerick...she was more commonly known as Kate. She emigrated to New York where she met dev's alleged father Juan Vivion De Valera who was supposedly spanish/American although there are doubts about that. He died and Kate married an Englishman called Charles E Wheelwright...apparently De Valera always wondered about the true identity of his father and if his mother had actually ever been married to him as there has never been any trace of a marriage certificate.

@@huub1989 Often wondered how Vincent would have turned out if the family had not emigrated and he had remained in Bunbeg??? All the leading Irish/American gangsters had one thing in common...a lack of a father figure as they all either flew the coup and left the poor mother to it or died young.
