scott speed could have been great if he wasn't rushed into a subpar Cup ride after one year in Arca. He literally came into the sport his first year in stock car racing and won 4 arca races and a truck race. If teams weren't so stupid back then, they would have had him do a full nationwide season at least, where he probably would have won a few races, before moving him to Cup after 2-3 years. Then maybe he could have been a really good Cup driver

Shoot, I feel just as bad now as I did the night I heard on ESPN.....remember my mom getting sobbing after hearing the news....they'll never be another Alan, him and those times are gone forever. Don't follow NASCAR anymore and haven't since the 2001....but for 15 years I was a diehard and when I do watch anything NASCAR it's stuff like this and from this era that I relive.

Okay,Im new to IMSA racing and backtracking to catch up....if this was the last race of the GTP cars what took their place that was similar to them!

WSC, World Sports Cars. They were open top prototypes. Ran in IMSA starting in 1994. Some makes of those cars ran up to 2002 in Grand Am. IMSA turned into ALMS in 1999 and replaced them with the LMP900 class. Grand Am replaced them with Daytona Prototpes starting in 2003

@jinjabreadman46 okay thank you,saw the Detroit Street race a couple weeks ago,The Daytona prototypes look.like a evolved GTP! Nothing beats the original Camel GTP series of the 80s and 90s though!

This Race Was Supposed To Be On ESPN2 But Due To The Network's Coverage Of The 2008 NBA Playoffs Game Between The Cleveland Cavaliers And The Washington Wizards The Coverage Was Moved To ESPN Classic. At The Same Time, NASCAR Asked SPEED Channel To Air The Race And They Agreed. After The NBA Coverage Is Concluded, ESPN2 Re-aired The Entire Race.

Thank you for sharing these older races. I like how you give good basic information in the description and don't spoil the ending by saying who wins (too many channels do that!!). Very nice. Thanks again!

I vividly remember watching this at my grandmother's that night. Lived only 3 hours from the track. Saw IndyCar run here in 2005 too. Now if only they hadn't sunk this place..

Mark Martin was supposed to be the grand marshal, but he left after the Cup race and Crystal Moore, the woman who sang the National Anthem pulled triple duty as she said the "Most Famous words in Motorsports" and drove the pace car for a ceremonial lap around the track.

Back when Chicagoland was packed not just for all NASCAR races but also for their IndyCar race. This was because of course Chicago had the season ticket as the only ticket option. Chicago would rescind the season ticket as the only ticket option after the recession. After that IndyCar would notice a drop-off in attendance for its race at the track. That combined with IndyCar's dispute with ISC (now NASCAR) over its promotion of IndyCar races at their tracks is why the company would drop IndyCar not just from Chicago but all its other tracks. Then over the next decade of course NASCAR would experience a decline at the track until the pandemic cancelled the 2020 race with the race being dropped from 2021, and now NASCAR is trying the Chicago Street Race with the goal of going back to Chicagoland Speedway.
