Impressive how the helmet save her from a rock hit. Very important the use of a helmet. In my opinion, that crossing should be avoided, too much exposure, an alternative route must be taken, it doesn't matter if takes more time.

i would forbid going to such places and add a catch-if someone breaks the law and go, he's gone. no search parties , jeopardysing more people , etc.. he's just gone

After summiting in 2016, I wasn't feeling well and we were moving slow, so my wife and I tried to stay an extra night at Gouter, but there weren't any spaces (as usual), so we had no choice but to go down. By time we made it to the coulair in the late afternoon it was acting like in the video, including massive car-sized boulders. We considered sleeping on the trail to avoid crossing until morning, but would have frozen to death (didn't have property camping gear with us given that camping isn't allowed) and it was going to be getting dark soon, so we had no choice but to play Russian roulette (and got lucky). I suspect that many end up in a similar situation; it's calm when going up early in the morning, but then like this when coming down in the late afternoon when people have no choice but to cross it. Given the number of people on this route, and the number of injuries/deaths in this spot, it's beyond me why a suspension bridge hasn't been built across the coulair. 🤷♂️

THIS is why you should wear a helmet even on easy ground on an Alpine route! The helmet ISN'T there to protect your head in a fall, it's mainly there to protect you from falling rock. Unfortunately I've seen people killed in rock falls in the Alps, these people were incredibly lucky!

I know nothing about climbing but why would she not just run over to behind cover? Sitting there just seems like your gambling a rock hitting you. You might get hit by a couple rocks but than your safe if you run out. Laying down there would put you at more risk, yeah you’ll get hit by a couple rocks but than your out of it, seems like much better odds than laying there hoping rocks don’t hit you
@davidfoo27624 ай бұрын
If even a small rock hits you while you try to run, not even injuring you, you'll loose your footing and fall to a certain death, as happens here several times every year. Flat on the ground protecting yourself with your backpack over your head is your best chance as most rocks will fly over you.
@chasebirkeland97134 ай бұрын
@@davidfoo2762 definitely had time to get behind cover
@davidfoo27624 ай бұрын
Yes definitely had time. This video shows that there is quite some time (several seconds) between hearing falling rock and its arriving and the main issue is to decide quickly and use that time well. Here she takes to long and provably was not drilled to best covering herself, although the was only hit by few rocks. Well done but also lucky.

I saw someone slipping there. He fell around 20m before he managed to grab a rock. He was lucky and made his way back, but everyone who saw it thought they'd see someone dying. Then I slept outside the basecamp that night and heard the rocks falling the whole night. That's when I decided it's not for me. Two days before, I had climbed Gran Paradiso and got into a thunderstorm on the glacier right after summit. This is not about stamina or being able anymore, this is Russian roulette. Think about your family and friends waiting for you before making your bet.

An avalanche of rocks? In a couloir? I don't believe it. No, but seriously. What looks like the easy way up is often the worst route you could take. There's a reason they were traversing the gap and not going straight up. Bad luck, and bad timing. That's what happened. I'm glad the most exposed climber is ok. She could easily be dead, and she wouldn't be the first.
@davidfoo27624 ай бұрын
It's the main route to the Mont-Blanc, no alternative to the couloir du Goûter on that route. Except 600m up rock climbing of course 😅. Way above the level of 99% Mont-Blanc climbers as she is. And therefore even more dangerous if physically possible in due time. Other routes all have equal or greater difficulties and far greater technical obstacles.
@ElSantoLuchador3 ай бұрын
@@davidfoo2762 They are aware of the dangers. I get that. I've done the same thing myself. Still, it is the danger zone, and if disaster happens, odds are that's where it's going to happen. It's not a surprise. I should have been clearer, but "there's a reason why they were traversing the gap and not going straight up" was basically me pre-emptively agreeing with you.
