I already GMed the chariot and destroyer. I might use this idea to make the heart of darkness a prequel to the destroyer adventure.

I just picked up this adventure a few days ago, I was thinking about running it tomorrow for a group of beginners at the library but noticed that there aren't descriptions on the type of PCs that would fit in that setting. I'd also need to gather up some quick stats for thugs, grave robbers and any NPC that might fit in scenes. I liked your suggestion for PCs and I see that PDM commented some stats. That will definitely help. I was thinking about using Basic Fantasy as the rules or the Deathbringer mechanics, the simpler the better. I'll have to look for a system that has Victorian style PCs and NPCS that I can borrow. I also have an idea for the bride if one of my players or PCs is female and dies. That PC will become the bride. I was thinking about WHY the party would be in the area, The party can start IN the coach ride to the town, (It provides an opportunity to roleplay before meeting Elizabeth and backstories can be fleshed out) and one of the PCs can be someone that Elizabeth wrote and asked to come and look for Victor. A Prop letter from Elizabeth would be fun to make. That PC can easily be Henry Clerval, and he can be the leader of the group. I think i'll run it in October closer to Halloween, I'll have more of a chance to prep and make any props or print outs I can use. Great video and glad I found it!

Sir, @5:20 can we agree on the need for trigger discipline? It is important to keep one's booger hook off the bang switch until it is time to fire. :)

I know, this doesn't really matter much, but a Lance Corporal and a Colonel are completely different rank-wise. A lance corporal is a low rank enlisted, basically almost the lowest of the low, barely above private. A lance corporal is not yet even a non commissioned officer (like a sergeant). A colonel is a fairly high ranking officer: a colonel's next promotion will take them up to general. Lance corporals stand guard, colonels are in charge of entire missions, even the ranking officer on an entire base or post. The lowest ranking officer (lieutenant) outranks the highest ranking enlisted (master sergeant). I know, "who cares"? I served in the military, so i get picky about that. 😊

did the 5e kobolds get cover, and use hit and run tactics with things like disengage, hide, and keeping to mostly ranged attacks. I'd imagine Molotovs are essentially alchemists fire, if the target is hit with it they essentially taking extra attacks each turn unless they use their action to extinguish it, while a kobold or two runs in for an attack on a target possibly disadvantaged by being on fire, then disengages and retreats behind cover. hit the target from murder holes, and another alchemists fire the second the first is extinguished.

Nice review. I ran Chariot and Destroyer for my group some time back and really enjoyed them. I have the PDF for Darkness and I'm thinking about running it, BUT, and this is a big but, I might swap out the Alien RPG rules for Mothership. They look slightly simpler, and although we enjoyed the Alien rules, we all had a hard time remembering them. Do you think Mothership would work just as well as the default? (I'm sure it would, just looking for another opinion).
@1ShotJC
@1ShotJC 5 күн бұрын
It definitely would. I’ve run some of the Alien adventures with other systems just because my player group preferred something they were already familiar with. Mothership would work great for these.

Question: is this the type of game where the players make tactical decisions (attempting to optimize mechanical decisions during your turn?) or is the decision making during combat largely just narrative and then the push your luck mechanic?
@1ShotJC
@1ShotJC 12 күн бұрын
More the later. You aren’t thinking about choosing maneuvers, spending action points, or making called shots in Outgunned. While there are a few limited use feats, and you can spend adrenaline at some key moments, tactics will largely come from how the GM sets up the scene, vs the game mechanics.

I did all the scenarios as a GM. I disliked the Heart of Darkness. It was overly complexed. It did get the answers right that chariot of the gods didn’t answer. It introduced a new alien race, but they needed some more depth. But the scenario….it was just a mess. I fell sorry for my players. They still enjoyed it, but not as much as the other 2 scenarios. The way you described the the order of play, i think it’s really good. It only messes around with the timeline. That’s all.

Tried running this the first I time I ran GURPS for my friends. None of us had any idea what we where doing so it was really boring. The adventure has some good ideas, but it wasn't the right one for my group. On the other hand, it did spawn one of our group's most infamous characters, The Black Guy With The Sledgehammer, a black guy with two arms, one sledgehammer and zero personality.

I thought about that but concluded that Chariot of the Gods makes for a stronger, easier start to the campaign, especially if your players may not be ready for a longer, more complex and weird Heart of Darkness. But honestly all these adventures are fairly modular.

I sort of feel the same way about the extent of Fort Nebraska, although, as written, a lot of it is inaccessible, so it's not *really* five full levels. The thing that bugs me a little is the radiation, which differs in intensity and location across multiple levels. I'm not entirely sure what having it there gains the adventure, although I suppose it could raise thoughts of the nukes, and make rigging a nuke for detonation tougher to do. I dunno ... "nuke the site from orbit" is *absolutely* already going to be an idea from my players, so I think I'm going to skip the radiation.
@1ShotJC
@1ShotJC 20 күн бұрын
I didn't mention it, but I mostly skipped the radiation too. The only time it came into play was when one group went to go get a nuke, I had that chamber flooded, so they had to get hazmat suits and then (awkwardly in those suits) deal with a radioactive alien charger in that room.

I'm running DoW now, and for some reason my (wonderful) players fixated on the insurgency, so to get info on the insurgents, the Marshal Station was literally their first stop! Talk about a baptism by fire ... Interestingly, I'm going the other way with the UPP. Sure, they're soldiers and at war, but they're really in the same boat as the Marines when the black goo drops. War may be hell, but what does that make the black goo bombardment? (By the way, I'm pretty sure the Border Bombers aren't the Engineers. I'm not positive, but there are some clues scattered through various media.)

I’m pretty sure the Border Bombers are the Perfected from Heart of Darkness, and it feels like they’re the only ones within the RPG timeline who would drop the accelerant at this point. I saw Heart of Darkness as basically the reveal of the identity.
@JeffWilder
@JeffWilder 20 күн бұрын
@@hankb9682 - SPOILERS for Heart of Darkness! > > > > > > > > > I don't think it's the Perfected. I'm actually playing in Heart of Darkness now (I'm Drabikowski), and one of the things my PC has discovered is that the Perfected are trying really hard to find worlds to FTL to and "colonize." They're also trying to extort the 26 Draconis strain from the PCs. Since HoD takes place *after* DoW, and the Perfected (AFAICT) arise in HoD, it doesn't fit for them to be the Border Bombers. But I don't know who they are (3WE? Morse "Beast" cultists?), so anything is possible, I guess.

Regarding the UPP invasion, perhaps it could be a mix. I'm guessing it couldn't be detected heading their way in FTL, but can be once the UPP vessels exit FTL in the system. Since the UPP force has to wake up, recover from cryosleep, prep their assault, and spend more time approaching the proper jump-off point at sublight speed, you could have them issue a warning to the troops on the planet to peacefully leave, thereby giving them an appropriate timer for where you are in the scenario at that moment. Send that message shortly after arrival but before they're done preparing. You can still make their arrival a surprise, not detecting them until they arrive, but still provide a time limit via comms while they're still transiting/prepping.
@1ShotJC
@1ShotJC 21 күн бұрын
I like this idea a lot - I didn't even think about the cryosleep and recovery time issue. But the moon getting an automated warning ahead of the arrival works great.

@@1ShotJC - Any military commander worth her salt will start wake-up from cryosleep before falling out of FTL. (Unless FTL messes with awake humans' heads, which I don't remember in ALIEN. It would certainly fit the genre, though.)

Ran my first convention game in May 2024, homebrew cinematic for AlienRPG. The best thing I did was run the game for some friends first, months in advance. Then I was able to trim, streamline, and build a pace for it. It was an amazing success! All the players had fun, and all are interested in playing when next year. Even convention staff got positive feedback! Honestly next year I might run the same game for new players, and write another for returning or advanced players.

Good review :) one thing l will add though is that many people forget when reviewing 7e material is that the philosophy of dice rolls in the 7e book being that dice rolls are not always about failing or succeeding at the task but are also about who has “possession of the story”. As such, nothing “hinges” on dice rolls. Player succeeds, player gets what they want and how they want it (within reason), player fails the roll, GM controls the story and uses it to ramp up the horror (but that can still mean the task is succeeded). Example, failed mechanical repair on the radio could mean player just takes longer doing so, leaving them out of action in combat making life harder for the others, or cannot flee immediately if they want to fix it whilst hearing creatures crawl up the lighthouse side, or they succeed but just takes a little longer whilst secretly the cultist on the other side picks up the signal and heads over. Failed rolls shouldn’t mean failure at the all the time.
@1ShotJC
@1ShotJC Ай бұрын
This is such a great reminder. CoC has always had a reputation that "one bad roll" can ruin an adventure, but GMs should never let that happen, and always give the players some way of continuing the investigation. At least until Nyarlathotep eats them in the final act!

Great Video! The style reminds me of Seth Skorkowsky a lot. It's balanced and fair. OG is my favourite system and has replaced Savage Worlds for me, so I am biased. Although I can't entirely agree with some of them, I can still see your negative points. Luckily OG has "modular crunch," so ignoring specific subsystems, as you suggest for Weak Points or Brawl, is valid and won't break the systems. Which is a big plus for OG for me. For VTT, there are now two complete fan-made Foundry Systems, sheets for Roleapp and Let's Role, and a system for Alchemy. The latter is still in development and will be the only official VTT support at this time.
