I admire the incredible skill & beauty of Maestro Carlos Kalmar! He knows i can't even see his hand gestures & if not for his beautiful head of hair i wouldnt of been able to recognize him when he's right in front of me. But since i was a sma child when wed see the symphony ion tv like in the Nutcracker i was more drawn to the man who moved his arms & body & used his baton & everyone made beautiful music but niot 1 note that was not directed by that powerful man! Carlos is the 2nd ochestra conductor ive ever met & although i performed 4 shows with him last year i couldnt see his fluid beauty until this past weekend at the Stravinsky Firebird featuring Johannes Moser & Beethoven's 5th symphony wherein i was given special accommodation to use my cell camera as a means of visual aid. And Monica Hayse got Rafiela Kalmar to look out for me by the stage door where i was invited in to say hi to Carlos & Johannes again. Carlos greeted myme with his wonderful smile & a warm embrace! I shall charish these memories along with those of working with Gabriel Kahane & attending an intimate concert with Joshua Bell last year & singing Believer by Imagine Dragons with world renound Cellist Johannes Moser on Oct 22 2019! I ♡ my Oregon Symphony!

Very nice interview!!! As a bassist myself, I must ask: what model is your double bass? Nice rendition of the Bach movement from the Six Cello Suites.

Just my opinion-vibrato, "slides", notes swelling soft to louder, louder to softer, accents, and other nuances are all potent expressive means that can lose their potency if they are used heavily. I liked the texture of the sound and the subtle way vibrato is used here but the opening aria has so many swells that, for me, creates a certain monotony.

Bassoon reeds are fascinating. The subsequent concert with Joshua Bell was fantastic.

As soon as I saw that Maestro Tortelier was coming to Portland, I put it on my calendar. My first Tortelier CD was the Respighi Trilogy ( Philharmonia Orchestra), in my opinion the best interpretations available. I then bought the complete Ravel & Debussy Chandos boxed sets (Ulster Orchestra), which have also been played repeatedly. I was so surprised to walk into the concert hall last night and see that Y.P.T. had consented to do this pre-concert talk, which was a treat. (The concert was pretty good, too!)

The Goldberg Variations for strings... wonderful! And a new performance of the same idea has just come out on CD, bij Les Violons du Roy from Québec City. It should be on You Tube asap!

The Monette page on facebook (and maybe on KZfaq) has a vid of him playing Mahler and Bartok excerpts that is *amazing*, and the sound quality matches. It's worth seeing after this.

You know, adding tags and things in the description and title like "Oregon Symphony," "Carlos Kalmar," the repertoire, etc. might be a good idea. I just chanced upon this but it's wonderful and I wish these had been easier to find!
