To acclimate, I started to spend three days in Mammoth, prior to my hikes. Those passes still kicked my butt, and no appetite. So, I started doing shorter trips, due to not being able to eat.

Wow, this place is beautiful even without snow! Really rocky though, I figured there would be more trees and alpine bushes, maybe huckleberries and paintbrush and more. But it is fantastic landscape in the golden hours.

@@MarmaladeOutdoors Oh boy, thats tough. I live near the Big Bear area but would gladly travel to where you are in SD, even for a day hike. I'm a 60 yr old avid day hiker, one suggestion would be to do hikes with veteran 'older' hikers in good shape, that would be fun. With your experience on the PCT may I suggest you lead a 2-3 day 'Intro', a kind of 'shakedown' of gear, etc for day hikers not experienced in thru-hiking. Being in SoCal you have tons of options, you might even charge a minimal fee to offset your living expenses which I for one would be fine with. Anyhow, if you decide you may give it a try send me an invite! Take care Mike!

I built out a Bronco sport for a friend to overland in. It’s a bit of a challenge. But the riser that needs to be under the bed platform, in the trunk area, doubles as storage, and has a pull out table for tailgate cooking.

You were talking about not being sure if you want to invest into getting a van for your new life style. My I suggest....rent a U-Haul van, you can use things you currently have on hand and take the van out for a couple of days to see how you'd like a van compared to your Bronco. I'm sure your Bonco probably gets better gas milage though. Also, something to think about... Can your Bronco go to more of the places you'd like to go to or would the van you're renting make it there also. Also you could do deliveries for Uber Eats, where you just deliver restuarant food to people. Or check out some of the other Uber type delivery jobs. I do Shipt here in my area. The neat thing about Shipt is if I go visit another state or area I can Shipt there also. Just some suggestions, hope they help.

Get a Bluetti Power Station instead of a Jackery. Yes Jackery's are easy to just pick up from Walmart, but you get so much more from a Bluetti. The Bluetti life cycle is also way more times than a Jackery. Also, you don't need a van or an RV for this life style. If you like car camping it's better, because you'll get better gas milage with your Bronco than a Van or RV. You can also get into more places that an RV can't. You could buy a tent or screened-in type tent so while out of the city you could get out of your car more often. If you need more space you could buy a roof top cargo box or bag for more storage. Thank you so much for doing these videos. I really appreciate you. God Bless.

Solid shake down video, Mike! This was a long video, but you covered everything you carry with reasons why and multiple uses. I especially like your use of synthetic insulation layers, any thoughts on extending synthetic insulation into your quilt? I'm interested in testing out the solar panel here in the Oregon woods and cloudy days, even s trickle would be helpful keeping electronics charged.

Anymore there really are no places you can go depending on where you live. Almost everywhere has no overnight parking signs. Hotels are not a good place because theres always people and they DO pay attention. I get asked to move at hotels more than anywhere elsewhere. The problem is the amount of car campers has exploded and some are ruining it for the rest of us. Campgrounds are charging more than $20 a night even for a tent site. I live in the country and its $40 a night. Walmart does not allow you to be there overnight anymore. In the country just pull over on a road and put a bag or rag in the window. That signifies you are coming back for the car and it wont get towed for a few days at least. Learn your area. Welcome centers do not allow overnight parking either. Ive been asked questions after only being there 2 hours. Car dealerships are a no no. Cameras and cat thefts are rampant. This guy seens to have a lot of money to spend on places to park. This is why i made a video on how and why you are car camping. Out of necessity or a personal choice will dictate your needs.

Luckily where I live we have lots of free water sources from springs to spickets at parks along with the creeks and streams. I wish more people would stop buying everything on Amazon and temu. Amazon has a take over the world mentality and temu uses slave labor in China. Seems to me that nobody really cares as long as you save a buck. So let's bring back slavery in America so things are cheaper lol force prisons to make our stuff. Then they learn a skill and work ethic to help them upon release. That's a real solution to a big problem. But no because liberal America would rather keep fighting over slavery that ended 170 years ago and making people work is simply a crazy idea to democrats.

Thank you for sharing this. You may be saving a life or two. That is very sad to hear that a young woman died from this in the past. I know people have died on the way to Everest and other high places. It is interesting that you had no problems in previous high hikes. I want to research more about this issue to understand the ‘mechanics’ of what is going on in the body. Does the literature say that if it happens once, you are more prone to experience it again in the future? Thanks, too, for the stunning photos at the end. Beautiful! Have fun whatever you choose to do next! And regarding us being disappointed in you? Please! I don’t think so! However, we would have been disappointed if you had died, so thank you for not doing that. 😉☺️

Thanks for sharing what you experienced in detail - it helps all of us to learn from other’s experiences. Hope you feel better soon. I’m a late 50s hiker and find going from near sea level up to the two Cottonwood trailheads (at ~10k) to do multi-day trips to be a challenge, even with an overnight in the walk-in campgrounds. I tried Diamox as part of my most recent Cottonwoods Pass TH trip (prescription from my doc taken per bottle directions which starts before going to elevation then continues per bottle directions) and feel that it helped somewhat. Good luck 👍
