One thing that grated on my nerves as i did my belt change was that he skipped on how to orient the thermostat when installing it. Theres a weep hole on a radial of the thermostat. I saw a video that said put it at 12 o'clock to let air eacape and someone else said to put it at 6 o'clock to let the coolant get through. Not sure which is right but i put mine at 12 o'clock. After a mistake with the coolant and an overheat. All is good now after coolant is filled with no air pockets in the block. I would go with weep hole on top. Seems to work for me. Also, guess I got lucky as my oil seals, which I thought were going to screw with me no end, were the easiest part of my timing belt replacement experience. Reminders: 1 make sure you seat all the seals flush with the surrounding surfaces 2. Make sure you plug the CAS wire completely and correctly or your car will not start. Ask me how I know. 3. Make sure you have proper installation instructions for the thermostat weep hole position. Make sure you KNOW it's in there right. 4. If you're using a digital torque wrench, make sure you know when proper torque has been reached, what the tone is supposed to sound like.

It goes a lot faster if you use a philips-screwdriver that fits in between the teeth, than you can just keep on turning it without having to grab the next tooth with the flathead.

CAS not a design flaw its how you adjust timing. You didn't need to remove those bolts anyway. The mounting bolts are behind the T belt cover this enables it to remove the CAS without having to reset the timing.

Yeah picked up a 300zx last week got it running and the timing belt exploded at 6k rpm i looked in the cylinders no damage watched this video put the new belt on and it started right up thanks bro

That was extremely lucky. The 300zx has an interference engine, losing the timing belt at 6k should have bent some valves. But if it's all running good now, I'm glad I could help!

In the middle of this job right now . No need to remove CAS. Covers slides right over it . Also I haven't replaced my pulley bolts yet . Going back out to do so now .... Wish me luck . Wish I could find a video showing how to remove them with out snapping them in half.

Very True- Do not Remove the CAS, just unplug it. I realize my timing may be off since I did this, I just got the tools to check it recently. It may explain why my idle is so high.

Yep, still have her. I've owned an '85 RX-7, which I sold, and a golf, which I sold, and a manual lexus is300, which is my daily now, but I still have the Z. I had to do the timing belt again about 20k miles after this video because I didn't replace the idler pulley, and the idler pulley went bad. Got the cam seals at the same time. New toy is a 1984 BMW 533i.

So, the adjustability in the CAS isn't a design flaw. It is how you set the timing. Maybe you were kidding. If anybody does this they should really replace the crank and cam seals (and water pump). You can't tell their condition by looking at them.
@thirdpedalnirvana
@thirdpedalnirvana 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right. CAS doesn't have to come out. I was a broke college student and so I didn't buy a full timing belt kit, Just the OEM belt. 20k miles after this the idler pulley went bad and my timing belt started rubbing against the timing cover. Did a full belt service with water pump and new seals, and I was still able to use this as a guide. Only tricky part to the seals is the vtc springs, but they're not that hard to deal with.

@thirdpedalnirvana

The tensioner screw is below it, with the bolt head facing towards the fender. At 7:00 I was just explaining that the bolts I didn't need to remove/loosen were hard to get at with the belt tight because we couldn't turn the pulley to line the holes up.

when rotating the engine, doesn't the tensioner gap change?
@thirdpedalnirvana
@thirdpedalnirvana Жыл бұрын
Yes, it can, but in my case it didn't move much, so no further adjustment was needed. The manual shows what it looks like when it's wrong, and it's obvious- either the two bits of metal are touching, I.E. too tight, or way too wide. If the two bits of metal are nearly parallel, you're all good. It moved so little that I didn't have to do any more adjustment.

Just a small correction. The plugs you referred to as "freeze" plugs are not that at all. They are called welch plugs or core plugs. The only purpose they have is in the casting process of the heads or block.
@thirdpedalnirvana
@thirdpedalnirvana 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, we are both right, Matt. They are indeed welch/core plugs and are important in the casting of the block, but if they served no other purpose, they could be tack welded the covers in place to prevent them from ever popping out. They do double-duty as configured, minimizing the risk of cold temperatures on the engine (when parked)
