Doesn’t seem to be a Becker due to the placement of the winding arbour as Becker’s usually have closer arbours in the middle of the dial like on your becker wall clock! Possibly Keinzle or Junghans though (more likely keinzle as junghans were usually larger with a different number font) But this is a lovely clock!

Then there's the good-quality mechanical 8-day Smiths movements that were often used in car clocks, but I have a few mantel clocks with the 'good' movement. My so-called 8-day Smiths wall clock actually runs for longer than 8-days.

Good for you! How did you get it working? There are companies in London and also Carlton Clocks who could overhaul it, but at some cost. I got a nice Mauthe 8-day kitchen wall clock working after oiling it and coaxing it past the sticky bit, as it was fully wound and spring probably 'set'. I like these clocks - cuties arent' they? Often found in offices I'd say.

The only thing wrong with it was that the wiring was a bit dodgy and that the plug had a loose wire hanging out of it, but apart from that, it was working fine.

I recognise the pendulum on this one. I've had various clocks with this type of pendulum. It's called Underslung chiming, to allow for a slimmer case. Yip, nicely in tune. That horizontal bar above the hammers is to use for when clock is being transported - don't forget to shove it up again to release the hammers.
@BitOutWolf

Thanks, I forgot it was called underslung. The clock is currently in the queue for fixing because the bezel fell off when I went to change the time on the clock and I still don't know why that happened.

@@BitOutWolf That's something I wouldn't be good at and wish you success with that. Are you thinking about going to the BHI's starter week whereby you take a pendulum-controlled broken timepiece and, by the end of the week, you should end up with a working clock and you'll learn invaluable skills? Okay, not particularly cheap and you may have to live-in, or stay in a B&B nearby, but if you're serious, do consider it. Then if you have an aptitude, you live-in for a whole year, do the course: practical and theory are covered and, if you get a good mark - ideally above 90% for both - you can consider going even further! I think Manchester has a college that has a course for RESTORATION of antique clocks and you're bound to learn some highly valuable skills there. The ultimate, in this country, is West Dean College and, for serious people, it's about £25k for the course and is really meant for those wanting to start up on their own in business.

@@BitOutWolf There must be about 3 versions of it alone in the UK. On the subject of chimes, try to get yourself a copy of De Carle's "Watch & Clock Encyclopedia" which has a section on chimes. It doesn't have the 3 more unusual chimes on 20th Century French box wall clocks though. I have one of those clocks and would encourage you to look out for one. Many people would dismiss them and that's where YOU come in, armed with your knowledge! Count the gong rods and hammers on both sides, i.e. 8 at least on one side and of course the usual 4 for the strike on the other side. I have an American pen friend who is very knowledgeable about chimes and chiming clocks. He's on KZfaq, but concentrates here on his other passion: electric sirens.

Yeah, a good-quality, low-toned chime and in-tune. So, forget what I said about having to scale up to a longcase, but the best examples are contained in a big longcase clock due much to the big resonating cavity, coupled with a good quality movement such as W&H, early Junghans, Gustav Becker.
@BitOutWolf
@BitOutWolf 18 күн бұрын
Yeah, It's become one of my favourites just due to those really loud and resonant chimes, I originally thought it was a Gustav Becker. However, someone told me that I could have been made by Mauthe, so I'm unsure now.

Aha! You've got one of those relatively modern triple-chimers - Bentima I think. I've had one as I recall and also remember a family having one, sat up high on a unit, NOT WORKING. Recently paid £70 for a really nice Vienna Reg-style striker like yours and works perfectly. It runs for 20 days! Yes, could be a HAC - yes, but if you undo the screws on base and slide whole clock out of its case, it might tell you on back plate. £40 is a SNIP - so well done. Gong's awful, but that can happen. My one has a better-sounding one - very like an older cuckoo clock gong. The bigger the spiral gong, the deeper-tone it will produce. Always bend hammer shaft - never the gong itself. My one's got a countwheel which can be a pain to put back in sync, but mine has a vertical wire you push up then let fall to put it back in sync.
@BitOutWolf
@BitOutWolf 18 күн бұрын
I've been thinking of replacing that gong at some point because it annoys me whenever it starts striking, which is the main reason I don't have it running most of the time also yes my Bentima triple- chimer this particular one was made in 1978. it's been a bit of a pain recently as it needs a whole load of new parts, including a new chime barrel. That's pretty good, only £70 for a Vienna Reg-style Clock.
@gaiuscoleman8815
@gaiuscoleman8815 17 күн бұрын
@@BitOutWolf Yes, that's an idea. Take your time with that though and obviously buy/bid on one that is intended for wall-mounting, i.e. to the back of a wooden case - as big as you can find - larger is deeper-toned and hopefully more resonant. The Bentima triple-chimers look good and of course you have 3 chimes to choose from, but not particularly well-made, hence it needing so many new parts. The cost of professional overhaul and repair would be prohibitive. And many repairers refuse to do them. That's why it's good to get a good load of parts from duff clocks. I have built up a fair collection over the years, including keys. By the way, keys fetch good money at auction, particularly for longcase/cable wind clocks. I splashed out £20 on a lovely sturdy longcase clock key at an antiques place. I found it by chance, thought it was reasonably priced and just bought it.
@gaiuscoleman8815
@gaiuscoleman8815 18 күн бұрын
Yeah, they take an age to wind and the spring, if it were to snap, would cause a LOT of damage, as it must be incredibly powerful to run it for a month. I assume you know about Gardner Houlgate auctioneers near Bath. They get some beauties in - including parts, keys, etc. Older clocks - 100 years + were better-made. Modern cuckoos are terrible, so my advice is to buy a much older one, even if it means saving up big-time for one.

@@BitOutWolf Defo! I won a fabulous big 3-dial French perpetual calendar clock there a number of years ago and a mate of mine won a nice marine chronometer. We stayed in Bath and then went to collect our timepieces and travelled back up North again in a rather nice automatic car as I recall. They also auction reference books, CLOCKS magazines, etc and an absolute treasure trove of goodies to examine. If you can't make it to the sale itself, consider bidding on-line and don't hesitate to ask for extra pics, Condition Report, etc. Beware however! They cannot and will not guarantee the functioning of any clock or timepiece, watch, etc. I'd also encourage you to subscribe to CLOCKS magazine. Then there's the British Horological Journal, but that's far more technical and for those who are in business, etc, but you'd still learn from those.

Another decent-quality one with subsidiary dials. Chime is in-tune, but a bit basic. To get a fabulous deep-toned, slow chime, you need to look out for a decent longcase clock. Again, various qualities - a few hundred quid to a few thousand. 🤣Oh - and ceiling height to consider.

That's what I'm trying to say: save up for a triple fusee gongs/bells bracket clock!! I won one at a good auction house in Edinburgh recently and paid in total about £2200 for it and it needs a full overhaul and even restored, but it's a belter: 10 bells, 5 gongs and 2 subsidiaries - a cracker.
@gaiuscoleman8815

Have had one very like it. Yes, 'middle-of-the-road' quality and a nice example to have. Big Number bottom middle will be a Serial Number, the 158 1/4 Number will be for pendulum length, the 18 - no idea. I'm convinced someone knowledgeable from Germany, England or USA ought to know. I'd encourage you to invest in some horological reference books too. I really hope you have a good repairer near you! And who won't rip you off. For a full overhaul of this type, I'd expect to pay up to about £300 - probably far more than you paid for it, as you can pick these up for about £100-200 at auction. Best bet is to source someone who works from home and is semi-retired, who does not have shop premises overheads to pay. So pleased a youngster is keen on clocks. I've been fascinated by 'em for most of my 58 years. I see a wall clock - double brass weights, that you could buy new in H Samuel in the 70s! Oh! you've got one of those rope Zodiac clocks. I remember someone we used to visit in 70s who had one of those and wondered how it was wound up. I suspect hers had an older-style electro-mechanical movement. All the Best - and thanks for commentary.

I bought mine at an antique shop for £50 which I was very surprised about considering the fact I've seen quite a few on eBay for £100-£200, I've been thinking of getting it seen to, especially because the Chimes decide to start, usually at about 20-25 past the hour, for no apparent reason, but apart from that, it works very well. And yes, I have been thinking about getting some horological reference books for some time now, and thanks for the info as well.

@@BitOutWolf That was a STEAL then, so very well done! Often it's 'right place right time' and you just have to go about often to nearby antique shops and bric-a-brac shops, fairs, car boots, etc. As for chimes at 20-25 past hour, that might just be a case of twisting the brass washer at the back of the minute hand and testing it several times till you get the desired result. The hands arbor often ends in a square section and it's just a matter of getting the hand/square in the right bit. I assume you have some good tools.
