Looking at it now, this video is truly nonsensical. In a position like the one at 1:54, if the attacker simply puts their body weight into pressing down with the sword, it would cut the carotid artery and cause death. Is ARMA still insisting on this absurd interpretation?

I still think what is shown in the Video does work, even if it might not be the most optimal response from Krump or the best position to strike from with Krump.

I remember when I first got into HEMA, I was very confused by this demo. But resources were scarce back then and I simply followed it. Now, having known who John Clements is, it all began to make sense.

Regardless of what it is called, if this variation Works in Sparring, then it's good to go. If 10 people have 10 different interpretations and they all work, then they're all good. You now have 10 different ways to kill people from one original source.

In case anyone happens upon this. That flat half-swording deflection is just awful. For one, the enemies blade is being redirected. Where is it being redirected to? Right, your HAND. INTO YOUR HAND. When that blade slices off your fingers, coincidentally your guard structure will collapse, and then the blade will go into your throat.

It would have been so amazing if Clements ever read the texts instead of looking at the funny pictures - but of course that would require to understand the source instead of interpreting the soures like a peasant

This is very useful knowledge it's good to see that you can Parry with both the flat and I guess the edge if you wanted to it probably depends on the situation and The sword and the techniques is my guess like whether you would parry on flat or on edge still very interesting stuff and very useful knowledge
@matthewpham9525
@matthewpham9525 3 жыл бұрын
Parrying with the flat is probably only useful when practicing with sharp swords at low-medium speeds. During practice, wearing out your weapon only weakens your effectiveness in a real fight. In a mentioned real fight, your life and limbs are worth a lot more than your edge.

I personally find for my decapitation strokes that the flat doesn't suffice. Nose squashing and Botty paddling yes. Chest puncturing , Limb removal and Decapitation- flat = wasted parries &/or strokes! Now where was that portal? A keyhole in the heavens opened up just about when I was to smite that little Alexander fellow.

Not very smart gentlemen! I was expecting head hits and not hand hits, quite dangerous. Even as a fencing coach, I would NEVER allow this unless it was a head target. HEMA is a developing sport, but antics like this make it like the wild west.

For the life of me I wouldn't want to use this technique, neither in a real sword fight nor in a competition. Having the opponent's blade right there against my body and near my head as you've shown still feels too risky to me. You say that there won't be an issue since the opponent reacts to bring their blade back, but that isn't the only possibility. What if my opponent panics and pulls back sharply along my face? I'll get a nice cut along the face using this version of the Krumphau. On the other hand, the windshield wiper motion would actually be safer for me and would reduce the chance of a double hit.

Yeah, even as a complete beginner this version of the Krumphau feels intuitively wrong and dangerous to me. All it takes is my opponent pulling their blade back fast for me to get a horrid cut across my face/shoulders.

I know I'm late to the party, but did this guy just advocate for turning your back to your enemy WHILE HE IS STRIKING AT YOU to go into a guard that he says is bad ("what am I going to do from that position!?") -- instead of just doing a Zornhau or a Versetzen? Furthermore, if your hanging guard is so weak that an enemy can just "press it down" then not even the "superior leverage" of the Schlüssel will help you (especially if you have to turn your back to the enemy whilst puling off that move). On top of that, pause the video at 2:12. If you lift up the blade of the attacker, he can cut your throat. If you fail to lift up the opponent's blade and it remains below your sword, the opponent can thrust into your flank/stomach area, move into a hanging guard and displace your counter-thrust. Good techniques must keep you safe while you are striking at the enemy. This one does not. The key is the wrong position to be in in this exchange. The only thing I can see work out if the opponent is unprepared is the last move (3:10) and only if that opponent is doing a "Danzig Hau," fainting an oberhau to go into a thrust. Anyway, that's my analysis: I think the technique he shows are too limited and too risky to be effective. They do look cool though

Because he's an idiot. If your oponnent has ever sparred with someone they immediately take their sword out of the bind when you take schlussel as a position. That is if he doesn't hit you when your back is turned..

I like this logic. Don't use the key guard on its own, it does nothing you couldn't get from other guards. But make sure whenever you step back to spin around, that's very useful.
@daaaah_whoosh
@daaaah_whoosh 5 жыл бұрын
6:28 you don't need a special technique to cut a guy if you just stepped out of the way of his sword. Just cut with an oberhau, it's arguably even more defensive. Other than that though, this mostly just seems extra dangerous. A shielhau or a zornhau don't involve pushing your opponent's blade back into you, and they can both defeat thrusts in basically the same way. Plus it's kind of disingenuous to say "this is supposed to defeat ochs, but only works once they move out of ochs". The most plausible example of a krumphau I've seen is a strike to the wrists as they move into ochs, before they have a chance to move back out of it into a thrust (or during their thrust if you're late but have the footwork to make up for it).

I think this is an interesting concept, and the way Michael does it is very intriguing. Now I do agree that I wouldn’t let a blade that close to my neck, but if you modified the technique a little I think it could work. I’d like to see some other interpretations of the kruphau by other hema practitioners. I did enjoy Michael’s video on half handing though.

1. Biomechanically weak way to parry, a risk of loosing a hold on the sword, or joint injury when receiving a cut while changing grips. 2. Swords will be damaged either way, they are tools to save your life, not an hairloom to last a thousand years, they can be fixed, thrown away, or maintained after the fight. You can't buy new hands. Stop protecting your sword when your life is on the line, parry with anything you can. 3. You can't expect every opponent to parry "your way", to add when someone parries your strike with their flat, your edge will get blunt along a much bigger area, its as if you hit a steel plate, the edge will roll on itself, their flat will be be marred with nicks which can facilitate breaking along that line. 4. Most guards are in line with the edge, you will loose fingers if you make a small mistake when flat parrying, such a great cost-benefit analysis, better to risk maiming yourself but maintain a little bit of an edge that will get blunt all the same when you strike someone, you have enough on your mind during a fight, don't make it more difficult than it has to be. 5. Bigger risk of permanently bending the sword, becouse you parry with an easily flexible part. 6. You loose the bind. 7. You can edge parry with the part of the sword that is most of the time not used to cut (strong or medium part) so no real loss. 8. Many museal pieces have edge nicks, either from parries or strikes. 9. According to the sources, only some parries would be made with the flat, do what gains you the most in the situation.

the true way of the art is to go in with the same killing intent as you enemy directs toward you and envelope him. the true masters(Musashi, Liechtenauer,Meyer) is see all say the same thing now to cut into your opponents cut. this is very powerful for an aspiring fencer. thanks. Every example he gave is with a hanging guard though. The crossguard is there to protect when the blade slides down! It's been said numerous times but it bears repeating: if the flat was used as the primary way of catching blows then the guard would be aligned with the flat!
