Funny but I was thinking of this Máirtín O’Connor track featuring Colm Murphy even before you mentioned him! I love his playing here. It also features Dónal Lunny’s wonderful bouzouki-playing. I never quite realised how much technique there is in playing. It’s not just a case of ‘beating the bodhrán’.

Have goosebumps from neck to ankles. First time I heard the pipes as a child my face was covered in happy tears. I was so deeply stirred my parents were alarmed. I didn't have the words then (too young) to explain to them.

Thank you Nicole for the great lesson! I am a pianist, choir director. Thought I would give this a try as we have music with a Celtic Feel in our church repertoire. Harder than I thought. Excellent tutorial!!

my goodness you are both amazing. you really should do more videos together please, this was fantastic and powerful. thanks for introducing me to this instrument. your playing reminds me much of the way indian tabla players can slide or move their hands around the drum to change the tone produced.

Love it - any chance you could show a clip side on of you playing 'bass/pop' at about 11 minutes, but side on so can see the face of the drum? Id like to see where you are hitting the skin but its hard to see where you are getting the 2 different sounds from -front on it doesn't look like there is much distance between the two locations, but on my drum I have to move about 6 inches and right on to the very edge to get anything like the pop. Anywho - very good - great lessons :)

Happy days Nicolle. I understand the techniques on creating the different pitches relating to the different rhythm patterns much better now, so thank you for that. Very well explained. It's only a pity that my actual playing still sucks. It has to be said that you have one of the most perfectly radiant smiles I have ever seen which makes me excited to learn. If only my shocking ability matches my enthusiasm, I'm sure that I'd be truly awesome!

I play a lot with the fingers of my left hand. I'm a bass player, it just comes naturally. I play a traditional style with my right. I learned in the Gaeltacht of Donegal in the late 80s.

i can probably play this on my drum kit. obviously using both hands. seeing how many sounds and grooves you can get using just one hand is amazing. also, i saw a video where that black ring around the drum is tape. this guy was taping his drum to focus the tone a bit. which to me, as a kit drummer, makes all the sense in the world. do you do your own taping as well?

Hi Nicole. Great video as always and happy to see you back here on the channel. I'm sure you already have this new cottage series well planned out and I look forward to whatever that may be, but I have a longshot request -- I'd love to see a lesson on hop jig rhythms and your approach to them. The video you have up playing with a piper to a set of hop jigs is some of the most understated and tasteful bodhran playing ive seen on here. There is no other videos or lessons or anything on this topic so would love to hear/see you break down some of what you're doing there.

We should talk about what I do with my left hand. I was taught trad style in the Gaeltacht in Donegal in the late 80s, but I'm a bass player, and I produce triplets and rolls, and polyrhythms using my left hand fingers.
