I grew up in the Castro, went to school at Most Holy Redeemer from K-3rd, played at Wheels Valley Playground, lived on Diamond St. from 1978-2021, my mom and dad lived on 17th & Market where there is a corner mom and pop store! I'm an old gal from back in the day when families were there! I now live in the tenderloin and work as a security guard in the City! Walgreens, Castro theater, Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy (my nieces and nephews went there)!

It's definitely not the only cable car system in the world. The relatively new BART line that connects the Oakland Airport to Coliseum station is also a cable car, for example. Or if you're looking for something more akin to Muni's cable cars there's a small, historic cable car system in Wales, UK.
@ckildegaard6 ай бұрын
It's the only *manual* true cable car system (as opposed to a funicular or the like).
@TohaBgood2Ай бұрын
I think he means this particular original type of manually operated cable car that was invented in San Francisco and then rapidly spread all over the world. The modern cable cars like the BART beige line are usually derived from automated ski lifts. Definitely still a type of cable car, but also extremely different types of systems.

Formerly known as 'Eureka Valley', the neighborhood was upper working class Irish Catholic and home to some of the 60s rock and roll renaissance players like , Janis Joplin and Carlos Santana. It was dangerous for gays to go cruising at night there as teenage gangs were on the prowl for homophobic violence which the police often refused to investigate, likely because they, themselves, indulged in the same crimes when they were teens. It was a pleasant neighborhood, white, hip and unpretentious and the transformation occurred when all the bars were bought by gays. It was the first replacement of a population that was not ethnic or racial.
