What cemetery are you working at? Amazing that you take time to do this. I live in Saginaw, been here my whole life and will never move. I can only hope I have a head stone that can be preserved. God bless

I’m interested to know when did you start doing this and how did it come about? Growing up, my family would go to different family cemeteries for All Saints Day and clean and put out flowers. I think I need to take over the torch as the elders in the family are aging. I don’t think I any one in my family has gone for years to check on family graves in the Texas Hillcountry.

@@Headstoneman MY dog just had major surgery two weeks ago. 4 tumors on her butt and a lypoma the size of a baseball on her chest. So caring for her has been a second job. What kind of brush do you use? I've been cleaning stones for quite a few years but I'm trying to find a larger one to cover more area. I use Dawn dish soap and water, plastic putty knives to scrape the lichen off, then brush the stones and rinse. I found a plastic pick set on Amazon to get into the lettering. I was able to do 3 small rows in a local cemetery before I ran out of water. Some of the older ones don't have water sources.

I use Tampico fiber brushes fender brushes. You can also get Tampico fiber brushes from Home Depot or Menards… they are called acid brushes and come with a hole to put a broom handle on them. If you want hand brushes you can order them from Atlaspreservation.com and use code PAST48 for a 12% discount on anything from their website.

@@Headstoneman Awesome. I've got to hit Home Depot to get some weed eater string. I've been working with the caretaker at a local cemetery, he's 82 and I'm 70...between the two of us we're 150 years old :) I invested in a new Ryobi weed eater with dual speeds with the .80 string and it's so much faster. As I'm only 5' tall I use a Bungee holder on it so make it easier on me. The pick set is 18 pieces and amazing to get into the lettering. One In worked on today had a beautiful flower pattern on it but groves about 1/2" deep in places and they worked great. My grandson is helping me now and I'm trying to teach him a lot of the local history too. It's great to see another person who does this. I just do it because I grew up next to a cemetery and spent a lot of years playing in it. Some day that will be me and hope someone will care enough to take care of my stone.

I love that you do this. When we would go to the cemetery to visit or clean up old family graves on Memorial Day, we’d always look around at the other graves and see whose needed some extra upkeep, whether it was clearing overgrowth, washing down the headstone or watering whatever flowers were there. I always enjoyed it and it’s something I want to instill with my children.

I was just asked that this week after I uncovered 3 markers from under grass at a cemetery where the records were destroyed ina 1909 fire, and never officially recreated. The dates on the markers are 1860, 1866, & 1861/1871/1872 (same stone). The 1860 marker is a cast iron cross in beautiful condition.
