I first encountered the bass flute on a jazz album - Buddy Collette’s Swinging Shepherds, which took its name from the fact the bass flute looks like a shepherd’s crook or staff.

I play sax but I never thought how big they got my god I thought baritone was the biggest I play tenor and I thought that was big so I can't imagine playing a subcontrabass sax, wow.

I play the contrabass recorder, you should have one of those on there. They are really rare. I did have a sub contra base recorder, but I sold it to the Los Angeles recorder Orchestra. You can see it on their website.

It is simply fascinating to see what ideas instrument makers come up with: "How could we build even more and longer tubes and bigger valves into our instruments to make whale-like sounds and roars?" Or: "How could we build an instrument so small that it could barely be played by a human hand and its sound may drive dogs crazy?"
