Theme song of the movie Above the Cliff.. The background of "Above the Cliff" was set in Harbin (one of the coldest cities in northern China) in 1937 just before the war when Japan was one of the 8 colonial powers bullying China. The story deals with hardships, sacrifices, loss of family & lives, about the courage to defend one’s country, about heroism, about keeping up hope despite the cruelties, bloodshed & darkness. This OST was sung live at the 11th Beijing International Film Festival/Award in 2021 Movie synopsis: After Zhang Xueliang led his army to withdraw from Northeast China, Japan occupied & established a puppet government in this Northeast region naming it Manchukuo. They made Xinjing their capital, (Changchun City, Jilin Province), whereas another important NE densely populated town, Harbin, lurked a large number of Japanese spies and underground Chinese party members fighting to protect the country. It was a constant struggle for survival of local Chinese, having to not only have to deal with Japanese spies, traitors, warlords, KMT (under Chiang Kaishek), all fighting to control and eliminate each other with CCCP members trying to regain control of all these territories and fighting the above enemies. During this pre-war period, imperial Japan secretly set up a gruesome laboratory Unit 731 using captured/forced Chinese citizens to explore all manner of human torture & experimentation using different types of bio weapons to defeat and weaken China and her people. It was a very dark period in northeastern Chinese history that no one should ever forget, much like the Jewish people being tortured & experimented under the Nazis. So this song has a very heavy, melancholic and painful melody and lyrics to it, longing /yearning for all those chaos, betrayals & bloodshed to be quickly gone and dawn (representing a more peaceful & better future) to come. This music is Russian influenced using guitar and harmonica to reflect Russian communist influence during this period in Chinese history. Knowing the history or background of any movie enable one to better appreciate and understand the lyrics and music composition and the singer who sings it (if s/he is capable brings out all these feelings). The stage effect wasn’t post production. Audience can actually see these effects onstage.

I watched several of your reaction videos with Kevin of the singer Zhou Shen. Like you I like Zhou Shen a lot but especially like this song "Unable To Ask" written by Mao Bu-Yee but sang by Zhou Shen. My feeling is that Zhou Shen was really feeling the emotions of the words and the melodic tune written by Mao Mao and we the listeners are affected by his singing. Keep up sharing with the rest of the world including your little corner of the world and your lovely brown cat. Wish you and Kevin the best from an 80 years old grandpa in Southern California USA.
