It's time to repot for me because i found multiple pants growing in the same pot.. however, I only tried repotting once. I never touched the traps or anything, but they all closed and wilted..that was an year ago and I'm a little scared of that happening again, but I wonder why that could have happened tho.

What is on the under side of the leaves????
@plantanarts
@plantanarts Ай бұрын
the stomata, basically pores on the bottom of the leaves that allow the entry of carbon dioxide to help with photosynthesis and also help with transpiration. If you apply any cleaning product here even lemon, it will clog these pores. so its best to not do anything. plus the bottom part of the leaves are usually less dirty anyways.

@plantanarts
@plantanarts Ай бұрын
The plant is fine now. I still even have some of those cuttings in water :) I will say that the heartleaf philodendron is such a slow growing plant compared to the rio philodendron. Once you propagate it and get new roots I recommend giving it something to climb on because the new growth comes out smaller compared to the older bigger leaves.

@@plantanarts okay cool thanks for that yes I kind of just use a few drops in like a cup of water of each rootzone and ccs for cuttings . I have been wondering whether or not it's too much fertiliser for them as my ratio might be a bit off.... I've been trying to use my fish tank water which has frogbit (floating plants) outside in a tub from when I last did a water change and it's been raining so it's also going into that bucket. I use this water everytime I water my plants for experiments I hope it works and not too much for them.

Hey, I'm very new to plant care and have no experience. I just wanted to know why it needs to be distilled water? Ty :>
@kitina
@kitina Ай бұрын
Regular tap water contains chlorine and minerals. Carnivorous plants require water that is low in minerals so the safest is distilled or reverse osmosis water. Rain water is good too as long as it's clean
@plantanarts
@plantanarts Ай бұрын
Because venus flytraps grow in bogs, and bogs are known to be low in nutrients and minerals. Not that there aren't any nutrients and minerals in bogs but other plants there consume these nutrients before the flytrap plant can and the minerals found in bogs are very little compared to the ones found in tap water. That's also why the Venus flytrap gets most of its nutrients from insects. Also, the minerals in bogs are not as harmful compared to the minerals and salts in tap water. You can measure the total dissolved solids, (minerals, metals, salts, ions) found in your tap water, using a TDS meter. It won't specifically tell you how much of each there is but it gives you a pretty good average of all the solids found in your water that are not an H2O molecule. Carnivorous plants are recommended to be watered with water that has TDS levels of 90 PPM or lower, (rain, reverse osmosis, and distilled water meet this criteria) tap water TDS reading levels vary from area to area for example mine reads about 240PPM and it is considered safe to drink, I think anything higher than 400PPM is not considered safe to drink. Same idea goes for carnivorous plants, they will die from all the excess and high amounts of minerals they are not used to growing in.
@plantanarts
@plantanarts Ай бұрын
I hope my lengthy response makes sense. The same goes for orchids because if you think about it, these plants (well some orchids) grow on the surfaces of other plants and the only water they get is rainwater, low in TDS reading levels. Also buying distilled water can get so annoying, so if you want you can buy a zero water filter which is better than the Brita filter, I just ordered one. but basically, that will filter out most of these minerals leaving you with safe-to-use water for your Venus flytrap and yourself.

crucial supplemental fact: roots do not like light. unless its something like orchid roots, in this case using a second opaque pot like in the video would also be necessary for this method to work.

Very well made! Question, how often do you think a venus fly trap should be repotted?
@plantanarts
@plantanarts 2 ай бұрын
Every 1 to years and it’s best to repot during dormancy period or closer to the start of spring. However if you buy it now from Home Depot I would repot it as that medium probably has too many minerals from the tap water big box store use to water these plants and these plants don’t like tap water. Use distilled, rain or reverse osmosis water only.

Dont give up on it, they are slow growers but they definitely make a come back. I just rescues another one. I basically water it when the water has evaporated. just slice a bit of it off with like soil stuck to it that way it can grow nicely. And then place that piece in a clear box with a terrarium soil mix and just mist it and place under a grow light and watch it grow. You can also just like cut that piece into multiple pieces and spread it out in the box so that it can fil out nicely. Serpa Designs has a great video on it here on youtube.

Yes, most people do end up killing their orchids due to overwatering but more often it’s due to repotting when they realize something is wrong… Repotting at the wrong time is basically a death sentence for the orchid whereas (for example) it would’ve had like a 25% chance of survival if not repotted. It’s highly recommended to repot when the orchid is in active root growth. In the meantime, there are things you can do to help the orchid like taking it out of the plastic lining and letting the moss dry out, treating it with a fungicide or hydrogen peroxide, and only water very sparingly from then on out (don’t soak).
