Having watched this discussion, and certainly the digital vs analog bit, I was really surprised that some people still think that analog racers are the better driver than digital racers. I've been competitively racing since 1993, so waaaay before there was any talk of digital stuff. Heck, back then our timing computer still ran only DOS... I look at it this way: to be a really good digital driver, first of all you need to be a really good analog driver. I mean: we all started with analog right (most of us have been in the game way longer than digital racing came to market) I for one still try out any potential car in analog mode, but with a non hooked up digital chip in situ. If it works as I envisioned then I hook up the chip and presto: a competitive car ready to race. I'll stand by Greg however that (some) digital racers just have an added ability, next to choosing the ideal lane to get through traffic in the best way possible, to keep a better overview of what the competion is doing and where they're located on the track during a race. Simply because that's a skill that is not as necessary for analog racing. For me, digital racing is just much more like the real thing: you might encounter slower or less skilled drivers during your race. Look at any real racing event (even F1, Indycar, NASCAR, IMSA or WEC) and the top drivers share the track with gentleman drivers or less skilled drivers. Even more so in multiclass racing. Navigating traffic is just another added skill, be it in 1/32 scale or 1:1 scale. That's racing. And that's why I love digital racing, even though I still really enjoy analog. I don't like to have to choose or be put away as a digital OR analog racer. I'm a digital AND analog racer. And good at both to boot!

@@ggaub I think it's much more a question of wood vs plastic track than it is of digital vs analog. I know that those who consider themselves as "real slotracer" quite often consider routed wood, braided or with copper tape (neither one having magnetic pull, as magnabraid is seldom used since it's so expensive) , to be the only "real" way of slotracing. And consider plastic track as "something for the kids". For those the switch to plastic track, and inheritly magnetic rails, will always be a thing. As even a mere Slot It MX16 will generate quite the amount of downforce when tires wear thinner. And digitising a routed wooden track is a very expensive, complicated and time consuming affair of doing things. That was our first though of the Paul Ricard track, but I'm glad that we opted for good old Ninco with all of its' quirks and bumps 😜

Some disappointing takes on digital racing on display here, even when the light is being shown. How it can’t be grasped that putting more cars on less lanes equals more track time shows a fundamental lack of understanding. Race length can be significantly extended because there’s no need to rotate through lanes or run extra heats. Do the math.

interesting discussion analog/digital. However, Marco's position is clear, financially uninteresting. the American market is not yet suitable for it. Oxigen is complicated, I understand from Alan the average American is not a tinkerer. The success of the Internationals is a great, fantastic event. So there is the start of a spin off for a small digital competition. step-by-step.

Yeah, I was having a hard time articulating what I meant. I get that way when faced with clear misunderstandings of digital, especially when it's clear the people I'm talking to believe digital is 6 cheap cars with magnets on a small track. ;-) But yeah, I can't disagree with any of that. I think there are plenty of tinkerers, though. The main issue is that there aren't any big digital events in the states, so people in the states assume the reason for that it's because it's just a cheap toy, as above. We do have to start small, though. Trying to launch a big event like the annual DiSCA 24hr race right off the bat will end in failure, if only because attendance will be too low for the effort on the first couple go arounds. The only reason I'd even consider going down to a digital event at ED is because they have the facility and the experience to host a great event. Running it as an extension of the slot.it nationals does make sense, though.

What I was trying to say is to not use to smaller magnets next to each other to make a bigger one for the sensor to detect because of the shape of the field, as per slot.it's guide. I also use magnets on both sides of the slot so that it doesn't matter which side of the chassis I put the sensor on.

Nice upgrade....I was thinking that this could be also used for coning front tyres. For instance, screwing in moving the left side of the sanding spindle down, should give an angle to cone one front tyre so that the outer diameter is bigger than the inner. Of course this works only for wheels that can be removed from the axle.

Possibly, but the cone angle would be pretty low. I guess it doesn't need to be extreme, though.

Sounds to me like Wayne has not read any DiSCA sporting regulations. Section 12, “Judicial”, clearly states the actions that will award a penalty. Drivers are also reminded during the pre-race briefing. Rookie drivers get their own briefing prior to first qualifying which places more stress on basic “safety” on the track. And yes, lane changing into another car is very much penalty worthy. Look where you’re going and don’t do it!!!

I'm glad that you enjoy the chat replay, but this was never intended to be a tutorial kind of thing. If you were to have been on the chat and asked for help with that, I would have told you that it's very challenging for any non-Carrera F1 car, and that it often requires significant modifications to the char and/or chip, even if you use a smaller third party chip. There are posts by people over the years on various slot car forums and facebook groups showing how they did it, but it basically boild down to finding empty space in the car, a chip that might fit, and doing whatever is needed to make it fit and connect it up.

24h teams are given 16 x Slotit 1171 G25 tyres and 2 motors, either 2 x MN09ch Flat 6, OR 2 x MX16 21k short can. Once handout parts are issued they can be used however the team wishes. Only one pair of tyres can be taken from race control at a time. Slipstream using only two sets during the race is definitely unusual but may have been possible due to the lower downforce on LMP2 cars, the closed side of the motor can must face the track, or a higher ride height due to lower offset, bigger wheels, etc. Sports Carazing were changing tyres after approx six hours, although we did use five sets just as a safety measure to secure our third place in LMP1 toward the end of the race.

The new Australian distribution of MR Slotcars at 24:00 will be good news for slot racers in Australia and good for MR Slotcar too. It turns out that a post-chat inspection of my iMac computer set-up revealed that one of the Yamaha speakers I use for external monitors on the system had fallen onto its side and was aimed directly at the microphone port on the iMac (lower rear center) so that when I spoke, a feedback loop was set up and the Auto Level Control on the mic would drop the level down to about half gain. I'd go into System Settings and mysteriously, the Input gain settings had been dropped and had to be adjusted again. Trying again to address the chat group, the bug loop would repeat itself and I and everyone else would become more and more frustrated. I apologize to Greg and all the WWSCC Group for the giant waste of time and attention. I will endeavor to persevere and do better next time I may have some meagre stuff about toy cars to share.
