You know you're getting old when your Aspidistra plants are older than the gardener discussing them! 😄 I have two very large plants, from and original that I divided (with a spade!) They are at least 40 years old!

I really like this method. I thought the different acclimation processes would stress the plant, but from soil to water to leca seemed seamless.

Just a recommendation, instead of taking up so much time cleaning the roots with your fingers, utilize a clean soft bristle toothbrush to scrub at the roots. Sanitize roots with some hydrogen peroxide and water. That’s it, make it easy on plant care

Loved your vid and perseverance. HATED your music! Doesn't fit at all, and is annoying. Last thing, you should have washed all the spag off of your roots before putting it into leca, as you are now promoting the very root rot you have tried to avoid. I gently wash off all spag, and then soak in water/hydrogen peroxide for a bit, before putting it in a semi hydro medium. Hope it works out for you anyway. Cheers!

Thank you so much, I often question why I do these things 😅but she is busy pushing a flower and a new leaf at the moment so looks like it is paying off, will do and update video in the next few months on how this goes, but so far so good. There has been a little bit of root rot but I do think I should have taken a bit more time to get more moss for the roots.

Thank you 🥰 I have an update on my anthurium regale/mag in my July Favorites Video. I am considering moving it into my DIY Pon in the next month or so, but waiting to see how my anthurium villenaorum does first. Which is pushing a flower and a leaf currently so excited to see how the leaf comes out. Will probably be the deciding factor for this guy.

Hi Margi, Thank you for you beautiful comment, really appreciate the kind words. I have two still in soil currently and the one in LECA. The one in LECA is defiantly the happiest at the moment, at has just given me four new leaves since spring started a month ago (It has two branches so two on each), while the others haven't done anything at all yet. I find that the fiddle leaf is the most forgiving plant I have in LECA as well, and has never thrown a tantrum (lost leaves or started to yellow/decline) like most of my other plants if I let the water reservoir dry out. Most of my Anthuriums or Philodendrons will get root rot with out fail if I let this happen at all. So I am very happy with mine in LECA defiantly more so then if soil.

Thanks so much for this video. I am a little scared about going away and leaving my plants. I am just in the process of changing my plants to water and or water and Leca. Can I ask why you keep some plants in soil. I am a little scared about changing my larger plants so I'm slowly starting with the smaller ones. I hope you are feeling better 🌷

Hi Margi. I am so glad that you enjoyed this video. I absolutely love LECA. I have mostly left bigger plants that don't need watering to often in soil. Things like some of my fiddle leaf figs (I have three, two in soil and one in LECA) my big green monstera, as well as a few Hoya's. These plants don't require to much effort on my part when it comes to watering and are also pretty drought hardy. So I am pretty confident that when going away for two weeks (potentially longer) they will be fine all on their own. Putting these guys in LECA I felt would make more effort for me on a weekly bases as I would have to check the water levels and fill them up weekly. So, for me it just came down to what plants can handle what. Things like my common hoya I know I can easily propagate and regrow if the plant suffered while I was away. I would also give it some time with your smaller plants in LECA to get used to caring for the medium before you move everything over. You will encounter some issues and learning curves along the way so it helps to work through these are a smaller portion of your plants rather then your whole collection at once.

Thank you so much for this video! Its good to know that you can successfully keep a fiddle leaf fig in leca. I am in the process of switched all my plants over, but I was afraid to switch over my fiddle leaf. I also didn't know about cutting it or making the small notch to encourage branching. I will try that after I switch over to leca. Thanks again!

Hi Jessica! Thank you for your informative video. I too put my plants in water but I do add RapidStart and wait until water roots grow b4 planting in LECA and self watering pots. My question is, did you say you have gotten thrips while in LECA or soil? I too worry about pests but have always thought they don’t show up when in LECA. Thanks again for your video. Love your channel and have subscribed. Happy planting! 🪴🌱

You will need to make sure that you get a section of the rhizome in order to get a new plant that will produce new leaves. Unfortunelty you wont be able to cut the stem to propagate.

Question - my Burle Marx has bern in sphagnum moss since i got it about 4 months ago and is ready for repot. It has grown with water at the bottom since i got it. I'm figuring i could just repot it into the leca without the few weeks of water. Is that correct? I have all my orchids in leca and love it!
@JessicaEccleston
@JessicaEccleston 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience you can defiantly move it straight into LECA if it has grown in sphagnum moss. I usually only do a few weeks of water if my plants were previously in soil. I do this really to grow "clean" soil free roots. All my proportions that I have grown in moss and moved to LECA has transferred perfectly.

I think snipping off all the rotted roots and hydrogen peroxide treatment etc add a lot of stress and shock to the plant. Personally I’d let a few rotted roots as is to take its natural course. Beautiful plant
@JessicaEccleston
@JessicaEccleston 2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree that certain processes can cause stress. I do find with my plants in LECA leaving rotting root can encourage more rot though, as the roots don't' break down the same way they would in soil. Personally I always like to remove all the rot (or as much as I can). There also wasn't too many rotting roots that I needed to take off for the for the amount of healthy roots that there was. There was two large chunks of healthy roots however that I took off for the pup and the chunk (which is now pushing too pups :D ) so I am super happy with how this process went really worked for me and this clarinervium.
@jbm1444
@jbm1444 10 ай бұрын
cutting rotted roots wont cause any stress to the plant. They are already rotted. The plant doesnt even know they are there because theyre dead. Clipping the rotted bits will help prevent the spread of the rot for healthier roots.

Thanks for posting this! This has been on my mind. Apparently if you need to bring a plant to Hawaii it can’t have soil but it can be in another substrate. I’m thinking of moving there one day. My fiddle leaf fig is much taller though. I’m afraid it’s gonna be a huge shock but I’m willing to try if it means I can keep it
@JessicaEccleston
@JessicaEccleston 2 жыл бұрын
I defiantly think that the bigger the plant the more stressed it will get. It might not be a bad idea to take a top cutting (6 leaves or so if yours in nice and big) and propagate that in water first. The water prop can easily be moved over to LECA once there is a good root system. Then you have so good insurance before you transition your full plant. I would only do the main fiddle once the prop has successfully rooted and converted. Please let me know how it goes would love to hear you come right.

@JessicaEccleston
@JessicaEccleston 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ramona, there are a few reasons why I did it at the time. I do love LECA and it works really well for me and my situation. I am actually uploading a new video today all about it. Since this video my clarinervium has pupped twice and gives me new leaves on a monthly basis. So it was a rough start and I did initially set the plant back a lot, but that's why I love documenting the process. I love trying new things and what I learn along the way.
