Much inferior to the movie. Paul comes across as a petulant child, storming from the room and whining to his mother that she should have warned him. In the movie after enduring the agony, Paul admits with wonder, “I see the truth in it.”

He couldn't take his hand out until she took the Gom Jabbar away from his neck. "No woman child ever kept their hand in the box exactly as long as I forced them to." Say, what?

I'm pretty sure those who failed were actually killed when they pulled their hands away. The Bene Gerrsirit were badass ladies and pretty sure the selection and standards for girls to join was extremely high.

@@1992Xenomorph Thus my point: She would kill him if he removed his hand. She would have killed any girl who removed her hand before she took away the Gom Jabbar. Yet Paul kept his hand in longer than any of them. Does that mean that she killed every single girl she ever tested?

Yes i think so. I view this as a pre-selection test for young girls who join the bene gesserit. I'm sure those girls who did not pass a certain level of pain were killed by the Gom Jabbar. Those who passed had potential to become bene gesserit. And paul did way better than anyone who ever did the test.

@@artgoat I think I know what you mean. Maybe she was going to kill him but unlike a woman child. She didn't want to see if he would pass the standard limit that young girls need to pass but push him all the way how much pain he can withstand

I didn't know Lynch said that of Dune, nor Herbert, but I'd say Dune achieved something utterly unpatronising. (Not including Toto). I saw it as a child and found it disturbing, challenging and brilliant; it's symbology, messiah archetypes, myth and Brad Douriff. It was obviously a huge flop at the time but Lynch amplified the nightmarish quality of the book and found something deeper. Something about violence, family and our human need for fairytales through the limited form of a blockbuster.
