I don't believe I agree with a single thing you said. Starting with the idea that 1st Ed. AD&D is the simplest version of the game. What about OD&D, B/X, BECMI? Those are all simpler versions of the game with even less of the complications that actually began with AD&D. Making your character unique and interesting in the OG versions was 100% a product of your own imagination. Heck, the game only defined 4 different classes so you had to be creative. Your dissertation on RPG vs RP can be summed up as a distinction without a difference. When you play any TTRPG, you are playing the role of a character. It's really that simple. Different people will put different levels of effort into role playing a character and this really has little do with "acting" although it has everything to do with improvisation, which you didn't mention. If a TTRPG has zero RP and it was simply a matter of the stats on a sheet of paper, then you're just playing a board game. Voices and expressions are purely a decision of the player, but getting into the mindset of your character, and not yourself, is key. What you seemed to focus on was more about how to create a memorable character. That's valid, but not what the video purports to do. So, since you didn't actually discuss many qualities that players should embrace to become "awesome", I decided to share my ideas with you. Of course this is somewhat subjective, but here's my list: Be prepared with all of your character's information. IOW, know and understand what's on your character's sheet without having to flip through books during the game. Play your character to his/her abilities, background and personality as described. Example: don't play your character as a gallant hero if his stats and background don't support it. Play the character as part of the party (or as an adversary if that's the case). Simply put, don't take up all the oxygen in the room. Be part of the team as your character would. Be prepared to embrace the outcome of the game, be it victory, defeat, disappointment, or even death. All aspects of the game are valid. You should treat them as such. It makes the game better when you do. A final note on your rant about players who grandstand during the game. Sure, that's something that occassionally happens, though its rare in my experience. That can easily be handled by the GM outside the game. If anything, I see far more players on the other end of the spectrum. When I see people doing this regularly, I'll consider it a legitimate concern, but as of now I don't worry about it at all.

Your Question, "What about OD&D, B/X, BECMI?" To me AD&D collated all the scattered concepts in OD&D, B/X, BECMI and elevated them into a complete game, with higher production value, more systems, more options, and an overall theme that was powerful and memorable. Pair that with the classic modules in Greyhawk, and you have a game universe that's endured. My main issue is performance is lame, unnecessary, and distracting from the imagination. It has become the norm with younger players thanks to CR and Matt Mercer in 5e (2014) who young people look up to thinking they need to do the same.

Im really digging this series of videos! After watching the first Tamoachan video I dug my old copy out and have been following along in it. A couple of our regular D&D group arent available one or two weekends a month. The weekends they arent available ive been running one offs or short 2-3 session games for the rest of the gang. Ive been running RPGs they had heard about but hadn't played before like Call of Cthulhu and Little Black Book Traveller and since none of them have really played 1st ed I had been thinking about running one of the old AD&D tournament modules, like Tamoachan or one of the Slavers series to give them that late 70s-early 80s experience. Run it as a tourney game with scores, timed etc... Watching your Tamoachan videos has made me realize I can't really run that sort of game or at least if I did they wouldn't get very far and sure wouldn't get any enjoyment out of the game. I have a great group, they are all great friends and great gamers, have been playing since 2nd or 3rd edition but that 70s-80s style of play, particularly a tournament adventure is so different from modern play style I dont think they could or would make the adjustment. I still might run Tamoachan but definitely not a timed, scored adventure like I had originally planned. Anyway, thanks for putting these videos out, im looking forward to the next installment and looking forward to seeing which module your next tour will be.

I'm glad you popped in and had fun with the videos! I've been out west for over a month doing research and of course, long hikes and horse riding for my next TRPG. Decimation - Outlaws and Lawmen. I love Tamoachan, but it's quirky. It lacks real Maya cosmology, mystery, and tome-style setting. Talking crabs? Dead ends? Mud? Where's the real scary mystery! I do plan on picking up the walkthroughs soon!

I also like the maps. I've always loved the maps !! Imagine, instead of looking down on a paper or vtt map that is restricted to a screen or paper size, you could actually walk around IN the map at full size and scale..... I built all the same maps on my Minecraft server. They are fully detailed and much more interesting.

It's quite an accomplishment in terms of balance. I've suggested it before however, the game's themes are so "woke" they are off putting to many people who don't like those types of elements in their TTRPG gaming. However, these are options. You can play Pathfinder just as old school as AD&D and have a ton of fun, especially if you drop some of the stealth rules.

@@Classic_DM yes I take a pass on their setting and fluff more and more - I prefer my FRGP to be just that, not current year but with wands and pointy sticks. It's why I won't be buying the books - to Paizo's credit, they make everything free online. But whenever I can I don't financially support firms that openly despize everyone who doesn't share the sinoptic perspective ("The Narrative"); a stance I'd have even if I agreed with aspects of The Message. I don't always get to make that call (not financially supporting such, since it is all-pervasive) but with gaming, it's a luxury good I don't have to have, and if the rules weren't online, we'll I'd just use my old stuff. I'm copacetic. The books could cost a dollar; I still wouldn't buy them (they are quality manufacture - credit where credit is due - just as the rules are well-thought-through).

@@Porphyrogenitus1 Well said! I really don't understand why they have evolved they way they did. The core mechanics are solid, but everything else becomes too silly which kills the sense of fear abd adventure. The game becomes a parade of "be different" as opposed to be brave.

The AD&D advice is great, the house rules not so much. “Spells are really powerful in AD&D” “Assume everyone (including magic users) have max hp. “ “Make all spells require 1 round to cast (except the ones that take turns)” In other words, take the system where the biggest flaw is how powerful magic users are compared to everyone else and make them even more powerful.
@Classic_DM
@Classic_DM 26 күн бұрын
Magic Users are powerful but only when they have spells they can cast that express that power, in my opinion. Many times, the MU is relied on for utility spells and damage output, but thus is very limited even at level 10+. This means a MU's first instinct is to not cast and hold back until casting turns the tide of the battle. Spell recovery is quite long for all casters which is probably why every subsequent edition fiddled with this. Lsstly, like the monk, 1d4 H.P. per level, often with no CON bonus, bad AC, useless martial abilities (darts, daggers, staves, can't land a hit etc) makes MU/ILL feel like a black powder musketeer on the battlefield surrounded by Vikings, Knights, or Apachees. Imagine being level 14 in the Vault of the Drow and your H.P. on average is 20. Even so, AD&D is perhaps the most creative, content robust, original, and magical game system ever created that changed everything. Thanks for watching and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Classic Traveller videos and the 4E Design and Features video too!

Pdfs are fine if you are under 30 and used to reading from a screen. But considering the expected cost of 5th 2024, 90 bucks for pod hardcovers is not excessive. And as a player, you would only need the Player's for 30 bucks. But I should mention, 1st AD&D is in my belief, the best of the game all editions. If you want to go back to BECMI, Rules Cyclopedia is a single book at 30 bucks and looks great. But, you can get free pdfs with Basic Fantasy Role Playing Game. The truth is, there are several ideal clones of AD&D1st out there. OSE and OSRIC and Castles and Crusades being a few examples.

Little late to this, but I've seen professionals pronounce the word "quetzal" like KEHT-zull. i.e. the god Quetzalcoatl is Keht-zull-koh-OT-ull for example. After learning the letter & letter-combo pronunciations of mesoamerican words, it's easy to sound it one syllable at a time and then combine it. No really weird letter sounds in English spellings, unlike Welsh for instance. Lots of syllables for their names, though, so take it slow at first. 😁

@@Classic_DM I recall seeing an old D&D pronunciation guide or two back in the day. In which I found out that drow was pronounced with a hard "o", as in the word 'grow' and sounds cooler to me than rhyming them with cow. I guess that never got around much judging by how many people I see using the latter these days. 🤔

Thank you for the video! I am currently running it for the first time with my players. I changed the niches up a bit into being a Creation Story and Tamoachan history (lots of fun backstory to learn about Zotzilaha, Tloques Popolocas, and other upcoming points of interest). There is a hidden gem in each diaplay, and the center alcove had a priest with a tray. The players had to give up the gems in order for the door to unlock. If they tried to trick it (using rocks or coins), the poison gas would begin to fill the room, making them panic (and believe the gods are really watching them!). It led to a fun Indiana Jones-esque scene of them trying to figure out how many rocks equal the weight of the gems. They failed spectacularly. Looking forward to hearing you talk about the rest of the rooms!
