This commercial has a special place in my childhood. My Mom and I actually saw it a few months before it aired. We were invited to participate in a paid study group where we had to watch some upcoming commercials and give our opinions on them. I remember they were especially interested in my opinion cause I was a kid. Funny thing was, I completely misunderstood what the point was cause I thought it was a preview for a Beyond Belief or Tales from the Crypt episode. It didn’t hit me until years later when I found out it’s a anti-drug PSA lol

I found this fascinating. These ideas are what led me out of the cult my parents joined when I was young. They emphasized bible reading and a bible read cover to cover with a bit of their interpretations of course, led me to realize that the god of the bible they worship was deeply evil and lucifer/devil character is the liberator in the official collection of literature that makes up the cononical bible. That's not what they teach at all but it became an obvious idea to me that their god was the evil they lived in fear of and Satan was simply offering a self-liberation from mental slavery. Once that reaized this is the story in the bible, the sub plot, reading between the lines, I couldn't unsee it and shortly after got out of that cult but had zero intention of joining any faith. Reading the bible was the cure to christianity. I was surprised to learn around this same time that early Gnostics taught something that I had essentially realized on my own but I was out of time and place by ~2000 years.
