Both are good, depending on the content. In my opinion, the Kingmaker is good for group content and not so much in solo. The Carving can be used in both solo and small-scale group play.

If you're starting out, I would recommend staying in the yellow zone and doing the mist. You have no risk of losing your stuff if you die, and you can get some easy silver for starting out.
