How about software. Normally they are geographically different as there is different requirements. MB service center for example in Germany, can they update it or if electronic module broken can they access software?

Plenty of vw golf imported now but insurance way more expensive for imported cars. But import cars are better spec too

Classic economics - competition benefits the consumers and advances product development in the process. Cutting oneself out of such a market means that you will fall further and further behind. Even Toyota and Mazda are selling rebadged Chinese EVs. Outside of Tesla and Chinese EV manufacturers, only the Koreans are able to make decent EVs but are far pricier.

For $US 6,000 (£4,800), I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat! I read today that Stellantis, will be importing Leapmotor EVs into the UK & Europe so fingers crossed. That said, I suspect the T03 will cost £14,800 over here in which case they can forget it!

Stellantis is bringing the T03 to India as well. I expect it to cost above 14000 USD (on road), which is a deal breaker for most of us here. The problem is that India mandates setting up manufacturing plant before a manufacturer can sell here. Since Stellantis is already selling Jeep and Citroen here, they will be able to add Leap Motors to that portfolio.

I got given a loan car EQC when the wife's old SLK went in for some work. Nice car but here in the UK the price starts at £64,000 (82,000 USD), very few sales and you don't see hardly any about on the roads. I think high cost of electricity now is also a problem , compared to China it's very expensive.

Can I buy a used Japanese car (Toyota, Honda etc) from China? I know China has caught up with (and even surpass) Japan in terms of car manufacturing but I'm interested in Japanese cars because they are already very common where I am and spare parts availability is very important to me. I'm particularly interested in japanese plug in hybrids sold in China.

Chinese vehicles in Australia, regardless of brand show the true quality that you can't see on the showroom floor unless you have a keen eye. Many have UNEVEN panel gaps on door and boot frames. Granted, American-made vehicles sold here are almost as bad. "Inbuilt" rust in LDVs and some other brands shows through in less than 12 months. Thickness of brake rotors and pads in GWM products is noticeable compared to competitors from Japan, Korea and Thailand. Suspension welds in brands like Chery are a laugh. So yes, buying cars from China remains a scam for the present.

Our group wanted to buy EVs direct from China; unfortunately local custom inspectors want to impose +20~+50% "grease" tax.

that's to be expected, in the UK import duty on cars is 10%, then you have to pay the VAT which is 20%, so 30% in total. Also shipping around £1000 / $1300. However still work out much cheaper. So BYD Seagull $10,000 + $3,000 + $1300 = $14,300 total Of course would need RHD version in the UK so I don't think it is feasible with. And would need to speak with dealership to discuss any warranty beforehand. However I believe they will not offer any warranty in imported cars so it is not worth the risk.
