Thanks for that. When you discuss merino, please include a comment about care. Although it can last a long time, it can also get pinholes really quickly. It must be washed in pure soap or a "wool wash". Standard detergents, particularly those with enzymes break down the proteins in the fibre. Cotton, linen, viscose etc are cellulose based but merino, other wools and silk are protein based. Merino is also very susceptible to catching on zips, hooks and other fastenings. In storage, it is also susceptible to moth larvae. So if you are going to pay for merino, it does come with additional maintenance costs. Some merino is also spun with a core of synthetic so it's worth paying attention to content.

Thank you for such a detailed, informative video! The higher quality t-shirts that I like have a reinforcement tape that runs across the neckline, and all the way to the end of both shoulders. Also, I’ve noticed that the lowest quality t-shirts I’ve seen have a blind hem done on an overlocker, instead of a coverstitch.

It’s great when reinforcement tape runs to shoulders, though from my experience it’s so difficult to find, especially in womenswear🤔

Excellent video, maybe your best one yet! 15:49 Seeing handmade t-shirts that people make without a neckline seam cover is a pet peeve of mine, so I’m glad you mentioned it. Once you sew a couple of them, it’s really not that hard to do and it goes a long way in increasing t-shirt quality. 18:04 Unravelling threads are certainly a good indicator of poor sewing quality. But it’s a shame that you used that specific photo of the green shirt in your example, because that particular photo shows a thread tail that simply wasn’t trimmed - which is an easy fix - not stitches that are unravelling. What’s more, that green shirt actually shows a little seen sign of excellent attention to detail: chainstitches (and/or coverstitches) very easily unravel, so that shirt had a couple of small horizontal stitches (sewn with a straight stitch machine) to tack down the chainstitch end and thereby ensure that the stitches would never unravel. It’s an attention to detail that not all manufacturers bother with. Someone just forgot to trim the trailing thread at the end. 20:19 Here in Canada where I live, clothing usually has a 100% - 350% markup whereas groceries have a 5 - 25% markup so the retail landscape must be very different here from where you live! Anyways, once again, congratulations on the excellent video!

Thank you for your comment, I’m very glad you enjoyed the video!🤗 Regarding retail, my ideas was that if, let’s say, clothing stores sell T-shirt with 300% markup, some grocery stores would be okay with selling same quality T-shirt with much smaller markup to customer, to get him through the door and then on same trip fill in shopping cart with food, which is their core business. But totally agree, retail landscape is very different country to country, so this may not be the case everywhere🤗

This is THE BEST video that i have watched on clothing quality. It is so detailed, and you explain the reasoning for everything. I have watched similar videos from other KZfaqrs but none of them come close to the level of education and clarity of this video. I would love more videos like these! Thank you!

I live in the USA. I am 75 years old and can tell you that it has become impossible to find any apparel fabrics of good quality anymore. I can only find "Quilting cotton" that has the quality that I like. Fabrics such as satins, linens, crepes, gabardines, etc are only available to me online and many of the online purchases are very disappointing. I love to feel and see what I'm buying and that is a bygone era as far asvi can tell. I'm very disturbed and sad that the fabric textile industry is dying except for cheap poor quality products that i don't want to use up my time and energy on them. Thank you for your valuable information.

Fabric quality is a big topic, probably even worth a separate video… I, too, had very disappointing purchases online where the fabric quality was simply not worth taking time to sew it. Luckily, it happened just a few times and now I found a couple local online stores that have consistently good quality fabrics within my budget🤗

Stylemaker fabrics will send you swatches. They are expensive but do have sales and a birthday 🎂 discount. It was so much easier when you could “pet” the fabric is store. 😂

So if you are returning (welcome back) then you want to be looking for 'Oeko-tex' certification on your bolts of fabrics now, it's a chemical safety certification and similar to GOTS in a few ways but cares less about the fabric's organic status and more about the dyes - the dye manufacturing industry as a whole has just been horribly ecologically damaging for some of the world's most important rivers and this certification guards against supporting this.
@Julija_Gobere
@Julija_Gobere Күн бұрын
Thank you for adding excellent point about Oeko-tex! Sadly, the fabric choice with this certification (at least where I live) is still very limited, but can be found (especially when you know what to look for!😁)

I recently bought the ebook of Readers Digest Complete Guide to Sewing, the 2022 version. Im a bit disappointed that basic pattern making is not included in the book. There is a comprehensive guide to alteration of pattern but no basic pattern making. I still have time to refund, I dont know if I should 😔

I like using the wider twin needle for knits. It takes practice and each fabric is different. You do have to do a practice piece first. I did learn about using it for decorative stitches.

When threading your serger using this technique, I have never been able to take it through the needles. Is that correct? You still need to thread the needle or am I doing something wrong?

For the overcast stitch, you could also lower the tension to reduce pulling. On the Brother computerized machines, this can be done individually for each stitch pattern and saved in memory.
