Lovely to hear this - he was my singing teacher at the Guildhall School (nearly 50 years ago!). Even then, when he demonstrated something in the lesson, he had a very impressive voice. I can remember him say ing once that he had heard some of his BBC recordings, and "they weren't bad!".

One of the most admirable version from old school pianists I know of. I just wonder why he takes so slow sometimes (especially in "In der Nacht") even though he respects Schumann's indications so strictly. Thank you for the upload. 🙌🏻

Are you sure this is from 1951? The baritone doesn't sound like Panerai at all. Could it be from 1950 when Valentin was sung by Savarese?

What I don't get is, why these wonderful uploads of Mascagni's music haven't got more views. Also, why they haven't got more thumbs up. Do people not get how beautiful they are, and how outstanding Denia Mazzola's singing is. I just know that I enjoy them immensely. Thank you so much.

Almost 100 year old recording.. this boy's voice ( boy..old enough to be my father!) Is about the most lovely youthfull voice I have ever heard, and this from someone who started out in junior choir at Church in 1st Baptist in Ann Arbor in 1961 and has sung in choirs around the world continously for , now going on 64 years. And the boy accompanying him is not far behind. God bless them both and may light perpetual shine upon them!

I know he’s supposed to be one of the greatest basses, but every time I listen to him, I think he had such a weird voice! And he did all these strange things when he was singing that no other basses do! Listen to the great Cesare Siepi or the great Nicolai Ghiaurov To hear what this area should sound like!

Despite the various comments about yehudi menhuins supposed tecnique deficiency, I have always enjoyed listenning (something the critics should do), to his musiic. He puts more feeling into his playing than anyone else i listen to. He is a joy to listen to and my only regret is that he was born too early for me to attend his performances. Than God for such a talented gentleman.

Peccato!!!!!☹️

This performance from Saturday, Feb 3, 1945 in Carnegie Hall. "Scenes de Ballet" was still running on Broadway (opened Dec 7, 1944 and ran for 183 performances). Stravinsky's poor little 16-minute ballet..so maligned...had been a disastrous experience for him. The entire opening dance in 5/8 (almost 4 minutes of a 16-minute work!) had been ELIMINATED during tryouts, since the Broadway "hoofers" couldn't get the hang of it. Conductor Maurice Abravanel and Choreographer Anton Dolin did their best, but producer Billy Rose, after c. 20 performances, decided to cut the orchestra from 40 players to 28 to save money, and only Stravinsky's ballet required that number; the rest of the music in the show worked fine with 28. So Scenes de Ballet ended up cut down to about 10 minutes, with a reduced orchestration. And thus, THIS LIVE PERFORMANCE of the complete work, conducted by Stravinsky while the butchered staged version was still running across town, is a fascinating and valuable historical document.
